Six Seniors at Boys State Six high school senior boys (1969-70) will represent New- and Mid-Carolina high school areas at the 1969 session of South Carolina American Legion Boys State, Commander Price K. Harmon of Newberry Post No. 24 announced today. Selected to participate in this annual civics worskhop, sponsor ed by the Department of South Carolina American Legion, are from Newberry High: James Ralph McEntire, Jr., sponsor ed by Post 24; Craig Whitten Morehead, sponsored by Lions Club; Richard Bruce Nelson, sponsored by Newberry Ex change Club; John Paul Whita ker, sponsored by Newberry Ki- wanis Club. From Mid-Carolina High: Tommy Kirb> Dawkins, sponsored by Prosperity Civitan Club; and Frank Lindler Lake, sponsored by Post No. 24, Am erican Legion On behalf of the members of Post 24, Commander Harmon expressed appreciation to the clubs mentioned above for as sistance in the sponsorship of the six boys to the 1969 Pal metto Boys State, which will be in session at the Citadel from June 1 to June 8. There will be 50 separate Boys States conducted this sum mer where boys who have just completed their junior year of high school will study the or ganization, operation, and poli tical processes of city, county, and state governments. At Boys State, Commander Harmon explained, “The boys from Newberry and Mid-Caro lina schools will have the oppor tunity to learn more about the functions of government. Also, they will get a better idea of the importance of each good cit izen in discharging basic citizen ship responsibilities. They will soon discover how the quality of government is related to the active interest of each citizen”. Over 600 boys and 75 council ors will be in attendance at the Palmetto Boys State. Jurors selected for Criminal Court beginning |une 16 The June term/ of General Sessions (criminal) Court will convene in the Newberry Coun ty Courthouse on Monday, June 16 at ten o’cjock a.m. with Judge Francis B. Nicholson of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, pre siding. Grand Jurors will report for duty on Monday, June 16th at 9:30 a.m. Petit Jurors will re port for duty on Tuesday, June 17th at 9:30 o’clock. Lominick, Rt. 1, Pomaria. - ANGLER'S CONTESTS There will be two angler’s contests, run simuntaneuosly for a two-week period, sponsored by the Newberry Country Club for its members. One contest will be for members in the age group of 0-16, with an entry fee of 25c. The other contest will be for the age group of 17-100, with an entry fee of $1.00. A prize will be given for each contest for the largest fish caught out of the Newberry Country Club ponds. All who wish to enter must sign up either Saturday or Sunday, June 7th or 8th, at the Club. The contest will begin Mon day, June 9th, and end Sunday, June 22nd. Be sure and sign up. All Club members are eli gible. New Officers for 1969-70 of the Newberry Jaycee-ettes were installed at the Jaycee Installation Banquet on May 30. Seated are Linda Turner, President; Joan Bledsoe, Vice Pres.; Standing are Betty Willingham, Treasurer; Sharon McNelly, Corresponding Secretary; Cynthia Mar tin, Secretary; Lois Bouknight, Director; Peggie West, Director. Absent were Jean Nichols, Director; Carol San derson, Photographer. The Newberry Jaycee-ettes were presented a Distin guished Service Award for the MOD National Founda tion by Mr. Fred Hill, Jr., MOD Field Representative for the National Foundation. The award was received at the Jaycee Convention held at Myrtle Beach May 23-25. The award was given on the Distinguished Voluntary Lead ership in the Fight Against Birth Defects.
