BASEBALL HITTING CLINIC BE HELD All boys in the Pony and the Prep Baseball Leagues who would like to participate in a batting and hitting clinic are asked to report to the Newberry College baseball field on Satur day, June 7 at 10 a.m. Instructors will be Coach Horace Turbeville, Coach Mel vin Bouknight, and Billy O’Dell. can lower yields at harvest time. With most of Newberry’s soybean crop to be planted fol lowing grain harvest this will take a lot of doing. This is the reason for so many clouds of smoke you’ll be seeing about the middle of June. Farmers will be burning the straw off their grain fields in order to get soybeans planted back as soon as possible. We wish we didn’t have to lose this valuable or ganic matter by burning, but the farmer has found by prac tice that this way is best. The soybean crop will return more high quality organic matter to the soil than will the straw from the grain crop. And the soybean roots boost soil fertility by add ing nitrogen to the soil. New equipment now on the market will plant soybeans in small grain stubble without any land preparation. We hope to observe some of these plantings in Newberry County this year. Firablight of Apples and Pears We’ve had a number of calls recently from folks who have limbs dying in their apple trees. This is fireblight, a disease which affects both apple and pear trees. Fortunately it seld om kills a tree in one year. There is no remedy this late in the season. Control must be gin at blooming. One of the antibiotics, streptomycin is used as a spray beginning at full bloom and repeated for each 5 to 7 days for 3 or 4 sprayings. Streptomycin for this purpose is sold under various trade names such as Agrimycin. All that can be done now is to prune the dead or the dying limbs or branches from trees. Pruning shears should be dip ped in a disinfectant solution such as a solution of chlorox after each cut. This prevents spread of the disease to healthy limbs of the trees. The County Agents Column Sell or Feed Wheat With Newberry County’s high population of hogs, dairy and beef cattle, it’s a pity we sell most of our wheat when mar kets are low. Wheat is equal to com in feed value and there fore should only be sold when the farmer can sell his wheat for as much or more than he has to pay for com. With the present trend toward high ener gy rations, wheat is better than oats to boost energy in a live stock ration. Wheat can re place up to one-half the com in a dairy or beef cattle ration and can replace all the com in a hog ration. Use care in stor ing wheat to keep moisture low and to prevent insect damage.
