Smokey Bear
club underway
Registration for the Newber-
ry-Saluda Regional Library’s
Smokey Bear Vacation Read
ing Club begins today, May 15,
according to Miss Mary Cath
erine Tanner, librarian. Any
child who can read is eligible
to join.
Designed to teach youngsters
about soil and forest conserva
tion, the Clab is being co-spon
sored statewide by the South
Carolina State Library Board,
the South Carolina Forestry
Commission and the South Car
olina Wildlife Resources De
partment.
“Keep South Carolina Green”
will be the theme for the young
conservationists. As a Club
member, each child will receive
a Smokey Bear button and a
membership card. When the
child reads five books, he re
ceives recognition as a Junior
Ranger. After he completes 10
books, five on natural history
and five of his own choosing,
he qualifies for a Smokey Bear
Reading Certificate. Each child
is encouraged to read at his
own speed and on his own le
vel.
In addition to regular activi
ties, the Club will feature pro
grams by local forest and wild
life rangers and conservation
films will be shown.

Last rites for
G. A. Johnson
George Andrew Johnson, 73,
died Friday afternoon at the
Newberry Memorial Hospital
after several days serious ill
ness. He had been in declining
health for a number of years.
Mr. Johnson was bom and
reared in Newberry County, the
son of the late George Wash
ington and Alice Longshore
Johnson. He had made his home
at Route 1, Silverstreet, for a
number of years and was a re
tired farmer. He was a veter
an of World War I and was a
member of Trinity Methodist
Church.
Mr. Johnson is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Eva Pitts John
son, Silverstreet; three sons
George Herman, William L.
and Olin Andrew Johnson, all
of Newberry; four daughters,
Mrs. Rebecca Bundrick, Silver-
street, Mrs. Nell Taylor, Mrs.
Linda Rowe and Mrs. Alice
Moore, all of Newberry; one
sister, Mrs. Nettie McKittrick,
Mountville; eleven grandchild
ren, one great-grandchild, and
one step-grandchild.

thodist Church with Rev. Jas.
Mishoe conducting the service.
Interment was in the church
cemetery.
Rev. Park, 78,
rites Monday
The Rev. George Henry Cal
vin Park, 78, retired Lutheran
minister, died Saturday at the
Lowman Home after a linger
ing illness.
The Rev. Mr. Park was bom
in Rowan County, N. C., the
son of the late Jesse Frank
and Mary Jane Trexler Park.
He was a member of the Luth
eran Church of the Redeemer,
the Men’s Bible Class of that
Church, the Lutheran Synod of
South Carolina, and a member
of the Men’s Bible Class of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Col
umbia.
He was graduated from the
Crescent Academy, Rockwell,
N. C. Roanoke College, Salem,
Va. in 1911, and the Lutheran
Theological Southern Seminary,
Columbia, in 1914. He was or
dained on May 10, 1914.
The pastorates he served dur
ing his ministry were Kimball
Memorial Lutheran Church,
Kannapolis, N. C.; Lutheran
Chapel, Gastonia. N. C.; the
Orangeburg Lutheran Church,
Orangeburg; Christ Lutheran
Church, Birmingham. Ala • St
Peters (Pineywood) Lutheran
Church and St. Thomas Luth
eran Church, Chapin; St. Tim
othy Lutheran Church, Whit
mire, and Augsburg Lutheran
Church, Union; and St. An
drews Lutheran Church and St.
Marks Lutheran Church,
Blythewood.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Mary Ballentine Park of
White Rock; three sons, Dr.
Conrad B. Park of Newberry,
the Rev. Harold F. Park of
Columbia, and the Rev. Karl
M. Park of Albemarle, N. C.;
one daughter, Mrs. Rachel P.
Laughlin of Hampton; three
brothers, John Park and Mur
ray Park both of Rockwell,
N. C., and Prof. James G.
Park of Newberry; and fifteen
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted at 1 p.m. Monday at
the Lutheran Church of the Re
deemer by Dr. Henry A. Mc
Cullough, Jr. and Dr. Karl W.
Kinard. Another service was
conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday
in the Organ Lutheran Church,
Route 3, Salisbury, N. C. In
terment was in the church
cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Dr.

Cooper. Augustus Dennis, Rev
Francis Fesperman, Deems

MRS. SMALLWOOD'S
BROTHER DIES
Guy E. Malone, 69, of Col
umbia, retired manager of the
Eckerd Drug Stores in Colum
bia, died Saturday at his home.
He was a brother of Mrs. Lee
Smallwood of this city.
Funeral services were held
Monday in Trinity Episcopal
Church. Burial was in Elm
wood Cemetery.
