Musicians honor HOSPITAL ‘Miss Juanita’ at Convention Miss Juanita Hitt, who is re tiring as director of Music in the Newberry schools, was hon ored at the banquet of the state convention of South Carolina - Music Educators Association at Myrtle Beach, Friday, April 25. Miss Hitt was presented a service award for having been past president of the Music Educators Association in 1961- 63. She also served as presi dent of the Choral Division and as Editor of “The South Car oline Musician”, the official magazine of the SCMEA. She also served as chairman of the Southern States Board of Ed itors for the Music Educators National Conference. Miss Hitt has served as the chairman of the State Music Festival many times. Over the period of years, her musical groups have entered the State Festival, making 321 superior ratings (1) and 110 excellent ratings (2). Miss Hitt had the distinct honor of having two of her choruses represent the SCMEA at two Southern Conference con ventions. The Newberry Boys Choir was invited to perform at Miami, Florida and the New berry Elementary Girls Chor us performed at Roanoke, Va. In presenting the award to Miss Hitt, Miss Marianne Hol land, president-elect said, “To night we honor one who has served in so many ways, for so many years. She has con tributed in numerous ways to the establishment and improve ment of music education in South Carolina. To Juanita, a wonderful friend and educator, we show our grateful apprecia tion. We feel, even though she is retiring, if we need her she will be there ready to lend us a helping hand.” Dr. Milton Moore was pre sented a plaque for his ser vices as president of the asso ciation in 1963-65. Other Newberrians attending the convention were Miss Mary Baker, who sang in the All- State Chorus; Rick Nelson, who played in the All-State orches tra; Mrs. Ralph P. Baker, chaperone; Dr. and Mrs. Mil- ton Moore and daughters; and several MENC Student Chap- . ter members from Newberry College. Huffman City Academy forms parents council A Parent’s Council, consist ing of representatives from each grade at the Newberry Academy, has been appointed by the school’s patrons to as sist the Board of Directors in working toward the future of the Academy. The Council, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, the president, and teachers of the Academy, will work toward further academic improvement, assist in the building program, and will conduct fund-raising projects for the Academy. A meeting of all parents of present students and of those who have submitted applica tions for their children to at tend Newberry Academy next year will be held by the Par ent’s Council tonight (Thurs day) at 8:00 p. m. at the Aca demy. The Council’s recom mendations concerning the cur riculum and the building fund will be presented to the pat rons at this time. It is urgent ly requested that all patrons attend this meeting. Livingston, Jr, 9th Grade. Firemen attend Fire College David L. Whitman, James Blackburn, Lewis Lee and Earl Dominick of the Newberry fire department are attending a one week Fire College according to a bulletin released today. The Fire College is being held on the Rowan Technical Institute campus in Salisbury, N. C. The annual Fire College is sponsored by the North Car olina Fireman’s Association.
