Miss Mary Kay Shannon,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
King Shannon of 939 Fair St.,
and Mr. William Luther Brice,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther
Leonard Brice of 2015 Main St.,
were united in holy matrimony
on Saturday, May 3 at 8:00
p. m. at Aveleigh Presbyterian
Church. The double ring cere
mony was conducted by Dr.
Neil E. Truesdell, pastor of
the bride.
A traditional nuptial setting
was created in the church with
two white floor baskets o f
white gladioli, pom-poms and
white carnations. Palms and
white candelabra were also
used to enhance the setting.
The family pews were marked
with satin bows and greenery.
Prof. Darr Wise, organist,
and Mr. Charles Ernest Dukes,
brother-in-law of the bride,
soloist, presented a program of
music. Mr. Dukes sang, “I’ll
Walk With God” and ‘The Wed
ding Prayer”.
Acolytes were Tony Carroll
Bartley of Greenwood and Ken
neth Hardwick of Myrtle Beach.
Both also served as ushers,
along with Charles Manning
Dukes, nephew of the bride;
Vassar Arendell Eddins, Jr. of
Mr. and Mrs. Elzie L. Turner of Route 2, Newberry,
announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda Kay,
to Sgt. James Edwin Rankin, of Kettering, Ohio.
Miss Turner is a graduate of Newberry High School,
Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing, and is
presently attending the University of South Carolina.
Sgt. Rankin is serving in the United States Air Force,
stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter. He attends
the University of South Carolina Extension College at
Sumter. Prior to his enlistment, he attended the Uni
versity of Cincinnati.
The wedding is planned for 3:30, Saturday, September
6 at Wiles Chapel, Newberry College.

his brother’s best man.
Attending the bride were Mrs.
Charles Warren Huffstetler of
Columbus, Georgia and Mrs.
Charles Ernest Dukes, her
sisters, who served as matrons
of honor; and Miss Sara Eliz
abeth Dukes, niece of the bride,
maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Miss Mar
garet Fisler, cousin of the
groom of Burgaw, N. C.; Miss
Claudia Zeigler, Charleston,
Mrs. Eugene Terry Handegan,
Orangeburg and Mrs. Charlton
Preston Armstrong, III,
Charleston, former roommates
of the bride.
The attendants were identi
cally attired in floor length
gowns of mint green imported
chiffon with white and dyed to
match Venice daisies accent-
the empire waistline, featuring
a sabrina neckline short sleeves
and a gathered full back. They
wore wrist length white gloves
and carried baskets of white
daisies.
The bride, who was escorted
by her father, was lovely in
a gown of silk candlelight or
ganza with a scalloped neck
line and short sleeves. Chant
illy lace embroidered in pearls
formed the empire bodice. A
deep scalloped border of lace
was used on the skirt and chap
el length train. Her veil was of
matching lace and pearls with
tiers of silk illusion. She wore
a single strand of imperial cul
tured pearls, a gift from the
bridegroom, and carried a cas
cade bouquet of phalaenopsis
orchids entwined with stephan-
otis and ivy.
The bride’s mother was at
tired in a floor length gown
of aqua crepe with a lace bod
ice, accented at the waistline
by a small bow. Her slippers
were tinted to match her gown
and she wore white kid gloves
and a white orchid.
The mother of the groom was
attired in a floor length gown
of apricot imported chiffon
with a jeweled neckline. Her
slippers matched her gown and
she wore long white gloves and
a white orchid.
For a wedding trip to The
Outer Banks, N. C., the bride
changed to a navy blue and
white dress with a monogram-
med bodice, and a matching
coat of navy blue. She wore red,
white and blue shoes and a
matching hat. To complete her
outfit she wore a white orchid
corsage.
The couple is residing in
Whitmire.
Mrs. Brice is a 1966 grad
uate of Greenville General Hos
pital School of Nursing and is
employed as a staff nurse at
the Newberry County Memor
ial Hospital.
Mr. Brice is a 1968 graduate
of the University of South Car
olina School of Pharmacy and
is presently employed by the
Whitmire Drug Company.
Wedding Reception
The bride’s parents enter
tained with a reception follow
ing the wedding at the First
Baptist Church Fellowship Cen
ter.
The guests were greeted by
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kirkland,
Sr. and introduced to the re
ceiving line by Mr. and Mrs.
0. M. Cobb, Sr.
. The bride’s register was kept
by Mrs. Robert L. Pinson and
Mrs. Thomas P. Culclasure.
Serving punch were Mrs.
Gardner Edwards, Mrs. Harry
Fisler, Mrs. MacDonald Rouse,
and Miss Helen Brown.
Assisting with the serving
were Misses Bennie Newman,
Donna Rouse, Lesa Rush, Mary
Lee Demetre, Ginger Kirkland
and Cile Purcell.
The wedding cake was made
and sliced by Mrs. T. L. White,
cousin of the bride and served
by Mrs. Albert Fields and
Mrs. J. D. Hogan.
Entertaining in the cake
room were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph
Newman.
Bidding the guests goodnight
were Mr. and Mrs. John Shan
non and Mr. O. H. Lawson.
Receiving at the home of the
bride’s parents were Mr. and
Mrs. S. C. Campbell and Mr.
and Mrs. Virgil Huffstetler.
Rehearsal Party
Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Brice en
tertained the wedding party and
friends at their home on Main
Street on Friday evening.
A lovely buffet dinner was
served and forty-five guests en
joyed the event.
Essay contest
State winner
Miss Lynn Gregory, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy
Gregory of Whitmire, was nam
ed second place winner in the
State Civitan Essay contest at
the District Civitan Convention
held at Myrtle Beach April 25-
26.
Prof. F. Scott Elliott, Sr., who
conducted the contest for the
local club said that Lynn won
an award of $75 in the state
contest and $25 for first place
in Newberry. She also enjoyed
an expense-paid weekend at
the convention.
Lynn, who is a senior at the
Whitmire high school, wrote on
the submect “Citizenship and
the Student’s Role in the United
States”. This is the second time
that the Newberry Civitan club
has placed high in winners in
the state essay contest. Miss
Louise Shannon of Whitmire
won first place in 1959.
