McAlhany, president of New berry County Municipal Asso ciation: WHEREAS, the Fire Service of our County perform many public services in addition to the suppression of fire, such as dwelling inspections , pre-fire planning, inspections of Com mercial and industrial facili ties, hospitals, schools and rest homes; and WHEREAS, today’s fireman is a technically trained and highly skilled professional pub lic servant, NOW, therefore, I, Preston W. The remaining five men took advantage of the Army’s two year enlistment program. All were recruited by SFC E.L. Wood, Newberry area Army Recruiter. Those who would like information concerning the Army schools and programs are urged to contact SFC Wood at the Selective Service Board on Mondays between the hours of 11:00 and 2:00. Scholarship to Gallman pupil Leonard K. Sanders, of 232 Boundary St. has been named to receive the Monsanto Ach ievement Scholarship in the 1968-69 National Achievement Scholarship Program for out standing Negro students. He joins more than 340 Ach ievement Scholars announced in March by the National Mer- i t Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program. His award, which provides between 250 and $1,500 per year ($1,000 to $6,000 over four years), depending on his need, is sponsored by the Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Missouri. Monsanto, the third largest chemical company in the U. S., produces chemicals, petroleum products, plastics, and syn thetic fibers. Its manufacturing and marketing operations are conducted world-wide. Monsan to's broad continuing program of educational support now in cludes four year Merit Schol arships for children of employ ees, National Merit $1,000 Schol arships, and Monsanto Achieve ment Scholarships for outstand ing Negro students. Sanders is a Star Student and Valedictorian of the June grad uating class at Gallman high school. He is president of the Student Council and a member of the Earline Gary Chapter of the Honor Society. He prev iously served as president of the Vivian N. Floyd Chapter of Future Teachers of America, and vice president of the Book Club. He is a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. Sanders plans to major in engineering at Michigan State University. WITH MEN IN The SERVICES CAPE MAY, N.J.—Seaman Apprentice Henry J. Brooks, USCG, son of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Brooks of Route 2, was graduated from recruit training at the U. S. Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May, N. J. The eight week schedule is designed to transform him from a civilian to a basically train ed and qualified Coast Guards man. Operating under the Depart ment of Transportation, the Coast Guard conducts an act ive program of air-sea search and rescue. They also operate lighthouses, lightships, buoys, day beacons and long and short range electronic aids to navi gation. USAF, Thailand—Airman 1st Class Ervin Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Lane, Rt. 2 Pomaria, is on temporary duty with the 4258th Strategic Wing at U-Tapao Airfield Thailand. Airman Lane, a Strategic Air command corrosion control spe cialist, supports B-52 Stratofor- tress bombers which daily at tack Viet Cong targets and KC- 135 Stratotankers which provide refueling to fighter, bomber, conducting the air war over Vietnam. The airman is permanently assigned at Plattsburgh A.F.B. N. Y. He was graduated in 1966 from Gallman high school in Newberry and the South Caro lina Area Trade School. DEVELOPMENT BOARD MEETING MONDAY There will be an open meet ing of the Newberry County Development Board for the en tire membership on Monday, May 12 at 8 p.m. at Newberry Federal Community Room. Seven directors-at-large will be elected at this meeting. All members are urged to attend. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL BEGINS The 1969 American Legion baseball team will be organiz ed this (Thursday) afternoon at 5:00 p. m. at the baseball field of Newberry High School. All who are interested in playing Legion ball are urged to be present. The coach will be former professional league pitcher Billy O’Dell. BIRTH OF DAUGHTER Lt. and Mrs. Harold H. Hun ter, Jr. announce the birth of a six-pound eight-ounce daugh ter, Harlie Anne, on Friday, May 2, at the Scott Air Force Base Hospital in Belleville, 111. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Creek- more of Newberry. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold H. Hunter, Sr. of Sil- verstreet. Maternal great- grandparent is O. L. Cook, Sr. of Newberry. Paternal great- grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Allen Hunter, Sr. of Prosper ity and Mrs. Annie Werts of Silverstreet.
