I.—Feb. 26— Thomas H. Pope, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Pope Jr. of 1700 Boundary St. was com missioned as Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve during grad uation ceremonies at the Naval Officer Candidate School, New port, R. I. His commission represents the successful completion of 18 weeks of intensive training in the military and academic sub jects of Naval history and or ganization, tactics, naval en gineering, seamanship, weapons and navigation. Ensign Pope has received or ders to report for duty to Cor onado, Calif. A graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., Ensign Pope entered the ser vice in April 1968. Murder trial occupies court Criminal court resumed on Wednesday morning with tak ing of more testimony in the jury trial of Hubert Goree, charged with murder in the January 26, 1968 shooting death of his wife, Alberta Go ree. The trial began Tuesday and two witnesses testified for the State on the shooting which oc curred at the couple’s home in Pomaria. The woman was shot in the head with a .22 caliber rifle while in the front yard. Defendants entering guilty pleas and sentenced by presid ing judge James B. Morrison during the March term include: Heyward Sims, non-support, one year or $1500, suspended to $15 weekly, 5 years probation. Milton Smith, driving while under influence of intoxicants, one year or $2000. suspended $250 or three months, 2 years years probation. Steve R. Gaston, driving un der suspension, $500 or sixty days. Freddie Lee Glymph, carry in-g pistol unlawfully, 1 year or $1000 suspended to six months or $500, four years pro bation; and driving while under the influence of intoxicants, 1 year or $1000, suspended to $250 or thre months, 2 years probation, to run concurrent with other charge. Bertha Elkins, violation of liquor law, $200 or 60 days. Mozell Gallman, violation of liquor law, $300 or 3 months. Elbert Mayes, violation of liquor law, $3000 or 2 years, suspended to $1500 or one year, four years probation. Clarence Swittenberg, viola tion of liquor law, 90 days or $300. James Oliver Miller, carrying pistol unlawfully, one year, suspended, probation 5 years. Lillie Mae Robinson, assault and battery of high and ag gravated nature, five years, suspended, 5 years probation. Nathaniel Wise, assault and battery of high and aggravat ed nature, 3 years, suspended to 15 months, 5 years proba tion. Earl S. Cobb, violation of the bad check law, $400. Frank Richard Ruff, driving while under the influence of intoxicants, $2000 or 3 years, suspended to $500 or 9 months. Norman Mathis, burglary, 7 years. Tilman Marier Sr. non-sup port, lyear or $1500, suspend ed to $25 weekly. Marion Nelson, non-support, 1 year or $1500, suspended to $10 weekly. Y. J. Byrd, driving under suspension, $200 or 60 days. Jesse Ward, larceny, five years. Daniel Buck turner, larceny, 6 months. Charles Junior Ricks, larc eny, two counts, 6 month. Lonnie Griffith, housebreak ing and larceny, 3 years, sus pended, 3 months probation. James Williams, hou ebreak- ing and larceny, 3 years sus pended, 3 years probation. George DeWalt, assault and battery of a high and aggra vated nature, 1 year. James Sims Jr., housebreak ing, 3 years. Marcellus Chaplin, larceny, 16 months, suspended, probat ion 3 years. Ad mission is free. Lecturing in three langua ges—French, Spanish, and En glish—comes naturally to Mr. Irwin who served with the U. S. Military Intelligence in Continental Europe during World War II. After the war, he entered the full time public practice of Christian Science healing. He is currently on tour throughtout the U. S. for the Christian Science Board of Lectureship C. A. Counts rites Thursday Cornealius Adam Counts, 84, died Tuesday at the Providence hospital in Columbia after a short illness. Mr. Counts was born and reared in the Prosperity sec tion of the county and was the son of the late John Luther and Mary Louise Kempson Counts. For a number of years he had made his home at 2616 Lee street and was a retired employee of Kendall Mills. Mr. Counts was twice mar ried, first to Mrs. Mamie Ale- wine Counts and second to Mrs. Iona Miller Counts. He was a member of Summer Me morial Lutheran church. Sur viving are his wife, Mrs. Iona M. Counts, Newberry; two sons, J. C. Counts, and David Counts, both of Newberry; three daughters, Mrs. Dupree Harmon, Newberry; Mrs. C. B. Stuck, Little Mountain, and Mrs. John D. Leitzsey, Pom aria; one sister, Mrs. Esther Lee Bowles, Miami, Florida. Funeral services were held Thursday from his church with Rev. Pierce Evans con ducting the service. He was a farmer and member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Shealy Wheeler and one son, John F. Wheeler, both of Prosperity; one daughter, Miss Elizabeth Ann Wheeler, Col umbia and Prosperity; two bro thers, Vern Wheeler and Car lisle Wheeler, both of Prosper ity; one sister, Miss Rosalie Wheeler of Prosperity. Funeral services were held Friday from his church by the Rev. Harold Fuller and Rev. Pierce Evans.
