my Specialist Four Robert L.
Bennett Jr., son of Mrs. Janie
Bennett, 943 Cline St., received
the Bronze Star Medal Jan. 8
near Dau Tieng, Vietnam.
Spec. Bennett received the
award for heroism in action
against enemy forces in Viet
nam, November 5, 1968:
An infantryman in Company
D, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry,
3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Div
ision, Spec. Bennett entered
the army in February 1968 and
completed basic training at Ft.
Gordon, Ga., before arriving in
Vietnam last September.
The 20-year-old soldier grad
uated from Newberry High
school in 1967.
His wife, Lilyan, lives on Rt.
1, Newberry.
DANCE
The Newberry County Rescue
Squad will hold a dance on
Saturday night, February 22,
(Washington’s birthday) at the
Newberry National Guard Ar
mory. Music by “Rufus Suit”
combo. Tickets may be purch
ased from Rescue Squad mem
bers, or at the door. There will
be drawings for door prizes
during the dance.
Clifton A. Mills, 85, died Fri
day night in a Newberry hos
pital. He was born in this
county, a son of the late Jacob
W. and Elizabeth Hawkins
Mills. He was a member of
Colony Lutheran church and
had served on its council for
many years. He was a retired
farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Katie Metts Mills; three sons,
H. Roy, J. Frank and Clifton
A. (Toady) Mills, Jr., of New
berry; five daughters, Miss
Lucille Mills and Mrs. Evelyn
Summer of Newberry, Mrs.
Mamie M. Koon of Petersburg,
Va., Mrs. W. C. Hawkins, of
Columbia and Mrs. Henry Bal
lard of Laurens; a brother, Ir
vin M. Mills of Prosperity; 15
grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at
Colony Lutheran church by Dr.
Virgil Long and Rev. Henry
McCullough. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were his
grandsons.
Honorary escort was compos
ed of members of Colony Lu
theran church council.
PITTS TO BE
CHAPEL SPEAKER
The Rev. James M. Pitts, as
sistant chaplain at Furman
University, will be the guest
speaker at Newberry College
Sunday. He will speak at the
regular 11:15 a.m. service in
Wiles Chapel. The public is
welcome.
A 1960 Furman graduate,
the Rev. Mr. Pitts also holds
the bachelor of divinity degree
from Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary. Before
returning to Furman campus,
he served pastorates in Vir
ginia, Alabama, and at Fair
fax, S. C.
BASKETBALL GAME

ketball game between Newberry
College and Elon College at
MacLean Gym will begin at 6
p.m. tonight (Thursday) in
stead of 7:30 as originally
scheduled.
