ALLEN BOYKIN CLARKSON of Augusta, Georgia announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Floride Cantey Clarkson, and Neal Work man Dickert, son of Dr. and Mrs. Elbert Jackson Dickert of Newberry. The wedding will take place at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta at 6 p.m. on June 4th. Mrs. Carolyn Savko, John Wagner and Charles Pruitt gave these numbers as a clari net solo. The entire group sang the following Madrigalians: “All Ye Who Love Music” by Don ato; two Elizabethan songs, “The Will Song” and “0, Mis tress Mine” by Vaughn Wil liams; “April is in My Mis tress’ Face” by Morley; “The Silver Swan” by Gibbons; and “Sing We and Chant It” by Morley. These included the ser ious and the jovial types. Other members of the department who participated were Darr Wise, Karl Kinard Jr. and Julie Hamiter. Mrs. John Wag ner and Mrs. Karl Kinard Jr. assisted in the presentation. Mrs. Fred H. Dominick, the club president, recognized the representatives of the various organizations and extended a welcome to all. Mrs. Gordon Blackwell read the club collect and Mrs. Louis C. Floyd called the roll of club members who were asked to present their guests. Mrs. R. D. Wright, the only living charter member, was presented by Mrs. A. C. Garlington. Mrs. George S. Duffie Sr. was recognized as a new member. Members and guests were in vited to an attractive tea table where they were served an as sortment of refreshments. The centerpiece, the decorated cake squares and the mints carried out the club’s colors of violet and lavender. Mrs. Dominick, Mrs. Black- well and Dr. Margaret Buckley alternated in pouring hot spic ed tea for the 90 present. Members of the Reciprocity committee were Mrs. Wiles, Mrs. John J. Chappell, Mrs. F. Scott Elliott, Mrs. Finis G. Johnson, Dr. Lillian A. Kibler, Mrs. James C. Kinard, Mrs. Hugh B. Senn and Mrs. James E. Wiseman. ' • la MR. AND MRS. RALPH HERBERT WHITAKER of Nance Street announce the engagement of their daugh ter, Janice Elizabeth, to Donald Russell Dowling, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Quinton Dowling, Jr., of Keystone Heights, Florida. The wedding is planned for June 7th in First Baptist Church. Miss Whitaker was graduated from Newberry High School. She made her debut in 1965 at the Debutante Club Ball, Spartanburg. She will receive an A.B. degree in elementary education in June from Newberry College, where she is a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Mr. Dowling was graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, Jacksonville, Florida and from Newberry Col lege, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fra ternity. He is presently in business with his father. Essay awards are presented Mrs. F. Scott Elliott, regent of the Jasper Chapter, Daugh ters of the American Revolu tion, gave out awards and cer tificates at a chapel program at Newberry Junior High school on February 12. These were the results of students participating in the DAR essay contest which is a part of American History Month. Laura Richardson was pre sented a medal as the winner of the first award and Renee Cousins was winner of the second award. All of the 34 students who participated were given certificates. Mrs. E. E. Epting and Mrs. Charles Golden conducted the essays, the subject of which was “The Heroines of the Rev olution.” This contest challen ges young people to become better acquainted with the his tory of their great country and has been placed as a require ment on the DAR Honor Roll. Woman’s Club has birthday observance The Woman’s Club celebrated its true birthday on February 13 at Smeltzer Hall in the form of a reciprocity meeting. The club was organized on Febru ary 13, 1901 with 13 charter members. Mrs. A. G. D. Wiles, chair man of the reciprocity meeting, greeted the guests and then presented Dr. Milton Moore, head of the Music Department of Newberry College, who con ducted a program of vocal and instrumental music by the mus ic faculty. The instrumental se lections consisted of “Minuet and Trio” by Mozart: “C^o*- FURMAN SCHOLARS—Mid Carolina Furman Scho lars are shown in the above photo.
