There were 11,310 cases of V.
D. in the State last year ac
cording to Dr. R. W. Ball, Dir
ector of the Division of Disease
Control of the Board of Health.
These victims were walking
reservoirs of infection, spread
ing disease to others with whom
they had sexual contact.
Dr. Ball urges all teenagers
and all adults involved in pro
miscuity to check with their
doctors or local health depart
ments for tests. “And I want to
remind all these people that
records of their visits are kept
under lock and key at all times”
he says. “They are never re
vealed to anybody.”

Dirty stories circulate and
everyone listens, but few peo

The State Board of Health does
—and it feels that South Car
olinians need to know some of
the raw life situations that
come into its county health de
partments.
Forty-seven people, all white,
were involved in one case of
venereal disease recently. The
tragedy is that none of them
needed to .contract V. D. A visit
to their doctor or health de
partment would have stopped
the spread at any point along
the line of contact. Here is the
story:

Alice was the first to visit
the clinic. Married two years,
she worked in a doctor’s office
to support herself and her 2-
year-old son. Her husband,
James, an insurance salesman,
drank heavily and they had
been separated several times.
One of Jame’s contacts was
Betty, a pretty high school girl
of 16. Missing class often she
spent much of her time in bars,
and continued her relations
with James even after being
diagnosed with V. D. Of the
several young men in her class
with whom she had contact,
one, the son of a lawyer, be
came infected.
James’ next contact was Dor
othy, 28, a housewife with 3
teenagers in school. She in
troduced him to her cousin,
Charlotte, 20, and this friend
ship resulted in Charlotte’s
passing syphilis to her husband,
a cigarette company represen
tative.
James also named as a con
tact, Ellen, 18. Her mother was
dead; her father lived out of
the State, and so she boarded
with a married sister. Known
from early life as a problem
child, Ellen passed syphilis
from James to a barber, George,
28 year old.
Still James’ activities had
not worked all their havoc. He
met Linda, 36, an unmarried
6th grade teacher, through his
friend Marshall. Soon the dis
ease had been passed to Mar
shall.
Now back to Charlotte, 20.
She met Neal, 20, at a cocktail
party, and they drove to a city
park for a rendezvous. Char
