In 1904 the state con vention was held in Newberry which was a brave undertaking for the young club. That year, Mrs. Wilbur K. Sligh was el ected the state president. Food workers end course Dr. Von A. Long, Newberry County Health Officer, an nounced today that food service worker certificates are ready for distribution. The certifi cates were earned by employees in the food industry who com pleted a recent training course in food protection. One hundred and twenty-four persons in this county took the course via the S. C. Educa tional Television Network. They may obtain their certificates at the Newberry County Health Department. Over 9000 persons across the state completed the course. “We commend these people for their achievement,” Dr. Long said. “We feel that they, their employers, and the gen eral public will benefit from their hard work.” Food service establishments with over 75 percent participa tion in the course will receive from the health department a certificate of excellence. The course will be repeated in 1969 for those persons who were unable to take the initial course. Heart Sunday will be ob served here as the high point of the month-long Heart Fund Campaign. Volunteers will call on their neighbors on February 23rd. A volunteer corps of 80 is being recruited to cover the residential section. Among the new chairman’s duties will be that of recruiting four area chairmen to coordi nate activities of the volunteers. Among the chairmen enrolled thus far are Bobby Dawkins, Marilyn Garner, Joanne Hast and Webb, all representing the sororities and fraternities at Newberry College. Proceeds of the drive sup port research, education and the S. C. Heart Association, community service activities of the only volunteer health ag ency here devoted exclusively to combatting diseases of the heart and circulation, which are responsible for more than half of all deaths in this county. Woman’s Club to celebrate anniversary The Woman’s Club of New berry will celebrate its 68th anniversary on February 13 at 4 p.m. at Smeltzer Hall, Newberry College, with a rec iprocity meeting. Club presi dents or representatives and friends have been invited to attend this function. Mrs. A. G. D. Wiles, chair man of the Reciprocity com mittee, will present Dr. Milton Moore, head of the Music De partment of Newberry College, and the other members of his department in a program oi music, consisting of madrigal: and instrumental selections Those participating are Mrs Paul Savko, Miss Julia Hami- ter, Darr Wise, Chas. Pruitt Carl Kinard Jr., and John Wagner. Mrs. Carl Kinard Jr. and Mrs. John Wagner will assist. The Woman’s Club has played an important part in the in tellectual and cultural life of Newberry since its organiza tion on February 13, 1901 with 13 charter members. Miss Louisa B. Poppenheim, of Charleston, president of the S. C. Federation of Women’s Clubs, 1900-1902 was present at the initial organization. Mrs. S. B. Jones served as the first president. Since that time members have served as pres ident, as secretary, as district directors and as chairmen o* departments of the S. C. Fed eration of Women’s Clubs. Mrs. R. D. Wright is the only living charter member. She was instrumental in promoting much progress during the early days of the club. The club has hhown an inter est in extending its influence by organizing the first New berry Library in 1904 and the Civic League in 1905. In 195? three members, Mrs. F. Scot: Elliott, Mrs. D. W. A. Neville and the late Mrs. P. H. Heisey organized the Literary Study Club and it, in turn, organized the Fine Arts Club.
