Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bach Kirkegard of 1728 Bound
ary Street announce the engagement of their daughter,
Karen Bach to Mr. Peter Clement Wehman, son of Mrs.
Julius Coachman Green of 181 Wentworth Street, Char
leston, South Carolina, and the late Allan William Weh
man, Sr. The bride is a senior at Columbia College and
was a debutant at the 1966 Newberry Cotillion Club Ball.
The groom, a 1968 Citadel graduate, is the Assistant Ad
ministrative Aide to U. S. Senator Strom Thurmond in
Washington, D. C. The wedding is scheduled for June 28
at Central Methodist Church in Newberry.
Seal sales top
1967 campaign
Richard W. Stowe, president,
today expressed thanks to all
volunteers who have aided the
1968 Christmas Seal Campaign
being conducted by the Tuber
culosis and Health Association
of Area Six.
To date, Christmas Seal re
turns stand at $28,132.97 which
is 3 thousand dollars more than
the 1967 campaign at the same
time.
Mr. Stowe commented, “Vol
unteer workers make is possible
for the association to carry out
more effective programs of im
proving the health of our cit
izens thru activities aimed at
eradicating TB and controlling
respiratory diseases.
This year,” he said, “452
workers devoted 1476 hours to
preparing .Christmas Seals and
reminders for mailing. The TB
Association depends upon the
support of these people to carry
on a successful campaign.”
The president continued “For
the support of our volunteers
both during the Christmas Seal
Campaign and throughout the
year, we are sincerely grateful.
Their donation of free time to
our cause for better health is
a clear demonstration of their
awareness of civic responsibil
ities. May our area always be
blessed with such civic-minded
citizens.”
TAKES PART IN
CITADEL CLUB
CHARLESTON, December 19
—As a member of the Luther
an Student Association of The
Citadel, Cadet Stevan Preston
Bodie, son of Mrs. Dorothy V.
Bodie, 403 Rodelsperger street,
Newberry, participates in a
schedule of worship, discussion,
and recreation. The members of
the Association meet each Mon
day night and follow a planned
program of discussion topics.
October 25-27 members of the
group attended a weekend con
ference at Camp Lutheridge in
the mountaihs of North Caro
lina. The next topic to be un
dertaken is “John Birch Socie
ty, For What Does It Stand?”
A freshman at the military
college, Cadet Bodie is major,
ing in civil engineering. He is
enrolled in tht Air Force ROTC
Program at The Citadel.
CALVIN CROZIER HAS
CHRISTMAS DINNER
The Calvin Crozier Chapter
of the UDC held its annual
Christmas dinner meeting at
7:30 on December 10 at the
Community Hall.
Mrs. W. H. Tedford introduc
ed the following guests: Mrs.
Archie Watson of Columbia;
Mrs. Ralph B. Baker Sr., pres
ident of Drayton Rutherford
Chapter and Chaplain of the
S. C. Division, UDC; Mrs. El
mer Shealy, past 2nd vice pres
ident of the S. C. Division; and
Miss Martha Vance Ellesor,
who is connected with the Nat
ional Red Cross and has just
returned from Vietnam.
After a prayer by the chap
lain, Miss Dorothy Buzhardt,
the group enjoyed a delicious
traditional Christmas dinner,
after which Mrs. Watson
brought an informative and
entertaining report of the
highlights of the General Con
vention in Richmond. She is a
past state president of the
UDC, past 3rd vice president
of the S. C. Division and past
3rd vice president general.
At present she is in charge
of the Confederate Museum in
the State Archives building in
Columbia. An associate editor
of the UDC magazine, she Is
a delightful and capable speak
er, and the group always looks
forward to her visits.
Mrs. C. S. Owens was pre
sented a past president’s pen,
after which the meeting was
closed with the Mizpah bene
diction.

Scientists name
new readers
At a recent meeting of th«
members, Christian Science
Society, Saluda, elected Clar
ence H. Cullum to serve as
First Reader for a one-year
term. In this position Mr. Cul
lum will conduct the Sunday
and Wednesday evening serv
ices at the church.
Assisting him on Sundays as
Second Reader will be Mrs.
Beatrice Jones, elected at the
same meeting.
The Christian Science church
consists entirely of laymen and
local members are democratic
ally elected to fill all adminis
trative posts and to conduct
services.
The two elected Readers car
ry the main responsibility for
the Sunday and Wednesday ev
ening services of the church.
Their primary duty is to read
Christian Science Lesson-Ser
mon on Sunday. This is a com
pilation of related references
from the Bible and the denom
inational textbook, pertaining
to a specific subject, and read
alternately by the First and
Second Readers.
During the week, the same
references serve as a Bible
lesson, studied daily by Christ
ian Scientists throughout the
world. Read at the Sunday ser
vice, it becomes the sermon,
and is combined with hymns,
responsive readings by the con
gregation, and prayer, to con
stitute the service.
The Wednesday evening meet
ings are held on the first and
third Wednesday of the month
in the Saluda Society. It is
conducted by the First Reader
and includes a period when in
dividual members of the con
gregation speak informally of
experiences of Christian heal
ing as understood in Christian
Science.
UDC CHAPTER HAS
CHRISTMAS TEA
The December meeting of
Drayton Rutherford Chapter,
UDC, was held at the home of
Mrs Ralph B Baker. Associate
hostesses were Mrs. Ralph P.
Baker, Mrs. Walter Summer,
Mrs. M. F. Bowler, Mrs. Louis
