One day while traveling to Greenville, Poinsett became ill. He stopped at Stateburg at th< home of an old friend, Richarc Anderson, who later became a full general and South Caro- linas highest ranking line offi cer in the Confederate army. Poinsett died there on Dec. 12, 1851, shortly before the Christmas season, unaware that the flower he had brought from Mexico would become a symbol of the Holy season. Cosmopolite that he was, Poinsett would have been pleas ed that eventually poinsettias would be grown commercially, and that new strains in pink and white would complement his scarlet flower. JANUARY of t/0l4P ^IL POINSETTIA If you received a poinsettia for Christmas and wonder about proper care to assure maximum plant life, these tips may be helpful to you. It's Christmastime Wherever You Go The spirit of Christmas is a universal spirit, which each nation has shaped into its own individual customs and trad itions. In various observances we can sense the gratitude which men feel for the hope of Christ mas. We can know the pray ers which they offer for peace and fellowship; and we can hear the warm greeting which comes from every heart. Three things are important in preserving the plant. Pro vide proper temperature, keep the plant out of drafts, and water it often. Temperature is very impor tant to the plant. Tempera ture should not range above 70-75 degrees during the day and not under 60 degrees at night. Temperature too hot or too cold can cause the poinsettia to become unattrac tive in a very short time. The plant should be kept out of drafts. A poinsettia left in a drafty place will be gin to lose its leaves quickly becoming unsightly in a brief time. Your poinsettia should be watered every day. The wat er should be room tempera ture. It may be that your plant will require more moisture in one part of the room than an other, determined by how fast it becomes dry.
