Ashley Kempson
dies Thursday
Ashley C. Kempson, 88„
died at a Columbia hospital on
Thursday last. He had lived
most of his life in Saluda and
was a retired farmer. He was
a son of the late Benjamin and
Tommie Summer Kempson.
Surviving are a daughter,
Mrs. T. C. Rankin of Saluda;
two sons, Voight and Carlton
Kempson of Batesburg; a sis
ter, Mrs. Mattie Sligh of Col
umbia.
Funeral services were held
at Trinity Lutheran church on
Friday by Rev. John G. Hipp
and Rev. Orbit Kempson. Bur
ial was in the church cemetery.
RECENT MOVINGS
Mr. and Mrs. Johan P. Tveit-
eraas have moved to 1301 Sum
mer Stret to make their home.
Rev. and Mrs. Henry Bright
are now residing at 1621 College
Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mills
have moved to 2006 Digby to
make their home.
NEWCOMERS CLUB
CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Newberry Newcomers
Club Christmas party will be
held at the Community Hall on
Saturday, December seventh at
6:30 p.m.
The affair will be a covered
dish supper and husbands are
invited.
CONSERVATION WEEK
ESSAY CONTEST
This week is being observed
thruout South Carolina as Con
servation week and will be cli
maxed with Arbor Day on Fri
day, December 6.

sponsoring an essay contest for
grades 3 thru 6 and one for
grades 7 thru 12. Prizes of $5,
$3, and $2 will be awarded on
a county-wide basis in each
division for the best essay on
“Operation NBC (Newberry
Beautification and Conserva
tion).” Essays should be 150
to 200 words and should be sub
mitted by December 13.
Essays may be turned in to
school officials or Newberry
County Extension Service office
in the Agricultural building.

officers for 1969
Amity Lodge No. 87, A.F.M.
elected 1969 officers at a regu
lar communication held at the
Masonic Hall on Caldwell Street
Monday evening.
Newly elected officers include
Vernon D. Force, Worshipful
Master; Andrew Shealy, Senior
Warden; Elon W. Mills, Junior
Warden; James D. Perry,
Treasurer; and Prof. F. Scott

Girls’ chorus be
featured at Civic
League program
Newberry Civic League will
present a program of Christmas
music featuring Miss Juanita
Hitt and a girls’ chorus from
Newberry High School at the
Community Hall Friday after
noon, December 6, at 4 p.m. A
social hour will follow the pro
gram, and refreshments will
be served.
Mrs. James E. Wiseman Sr.,
and Mrs. Steve C. Griffith will
be co-chairmen for this Occa
sion. Prof. F. Scott Elliott Sr.,
president, urges all League
members and their friends to
attend and see the Christmas
decorations which have been ad
ded to the Community Hall for
the holiday season.
Civic League members who
decorated the interior of the
Community Hall included Mrs.
Steve C. Griffith, Mrs. Louis C.
Floyd, and Mrs. W. M. Garling-
ton, and those who decorated
the exterior included Prof. F.
