Members of City Council were faced with a heavy agenda Tuesday night, hut completed their business in a relatively short time and adjourned at '.COO p.m. (b> unci linen C D. (’(deman, Preston Me Albany and Claude Partain, who were re-elected to four year terms on Council last week, were given their oath of office by City Attorney R. Aubrey Harley. Council approved annexation into tin 1 city of an area hounded by Dernll Avenue, Smith Road (Perm Street and the present city limits. All property owners in the area had requested an nexation and council had prev- lou.-dy given approval. Since this involved a change in the ordinance, advert ist ment was required. Last night’s action was on the second and final read i ng. ('ouiH'il was advised that ad v r * is.em.ru’ ha - been placed in *he local papers of council ap proval .f an ordinance to sur face -yd Street. City Manager Riebe stated that no objections to the improvement have been received. Property owners will nay a portion of the resurfacing cost either in lump sum or ov er- a period of four- years. Manager Ru be advised Coun cil that the City Housing Au thority had (-viewed the request from Bethlehem Church to par- ’ mqiate in the rent supplement program and had recommended council approval of a required resolution granting city approv al. The request from the church, -igned by the Chairman of the Bonn! of Deacons, the pastor and the cb-rk was approved by council. A first reading wa.- given to the P.tS!* business license. A few changes were noted, prin cipal of which was changing date, on which the license must he secured f i om March 1 -t to April 1st. The fence, gates ami a concrete pad and drainage pipe for the project were estimated to cost $lld.'L Council approved expenditure of this amount from a carry over in the first six months’ : udget. Council also voted to accept the low hid of Highway Sur facing Company, lac per square v.ird, for surfacing Wise St. The approximate cost would hi 1 - :;bi ii i, l’u re base of two police ear.- it an estimat.-d S1M7SM7 was approved. This amount also comes from the carry over m the budge!. A discussion was held of hil ling procedures of the city and council authorized the continued lease of a billing machine now being used until a committee could further investigate other lulling -ystems. Mayor Shealy appointed ('ouneilmen Boiikni-'ht .MeAlhany and Partain to this committee. Council held in abeyance, pending further investigation, a request for purchase of right of way over city property by Duke Power Company. This area involved is near Bush River pumping station. Mayor Shealy notified coun cil that approval had been ob tained from the State Highway Department for placing traffic signals at the intersection of Boundary and Drayton Streets. Council authorized the city man ager to obtain specificat ions for the lights from the High way iVpartment and to give an estimated cost of the install ation to council. Council also roque-ted the Highway Depart ment to give approval to traffic signals at the intersection of Milligan ami Caldwell and Har- rim/ton ami Caldwell Streets.
