G Player of Week i / George Taylor, 6’0” 185-pound Newberry College senior from Gaston, S. C., has been named South Carolina’s player of the week for his tremendous individual effort in the In dians’ 24-15 victory over Elon last Saturday. In last Saturday’s muddy contest, the wiry South Carolin ian rushed for 142 yards in 36 carries for a 3.9 average per carry, scored one touchdown from eight yards out, and re covered a fumble which set up an Indian score. Taylor had rushes of eight, nine (twice), 11, 12 and 16 yards during the course of the night. What was so amazing was that in the 30- degree weather which included rain, sleet and snow, Taylor did not fumble a single time while the opponents’ offensive backs fumbled six times. The 142 yard effort gives Taylor a total of 514 yards on the season. He has now amassed 2,152 yards in his four-year car eer, along with 24 touchdowns. Taylor is a terrific change-of-pace runner who makes 50 per cene of his yardage on second effort and raw guts. Through his career, the modest senior has received such hon ors as Most Valuable Back Award along with All-District All-Star, Second Team All-State, All-Conference, Honorable Mention All-American Lutheran College. This year he was named to Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges. Hammersla Renegade of Week Bob Hammersla, a 6”0” 195 pound junior from Jacksonville, Fla., has been named Renegade of the week by the Newberry College coaching staff for his defensive effort in the Indian’s victory over Elon last Saturday (Nov. 9). It was the second time this year he has won the honor. Hammersla, moved to the new position as linebacker from his normal offensive tackle position of last season, has made the change quite easily. “Hammer,” as he is called by his teammates, did just that in the victory Saturday. He ham mered the Elon ball carriers, causing two fumbles. He also made seven individual tackles and 10 assists. Head mentor Fred Herren had high praise for his fihe linebacker. “I’m glad we’ll have him for the two remaining games this year, and for all of next season,” Herren said.
