The Indians’ final home game of the season is set for 7:30 p.m. in Setzler Field. Thus far in the season, the Catamounts and the Indians are equal in victories with three each. Newberry has lost fiye, Western Carolina four. The Cats lost their first two contests, to Carson Newman, 24-7, and to Appalachian, 24-7. Western then put together a three-game winning streak, beating Guif- ford 35-7, Catawba, 38-35, and Emory and Henry 34-20. The Cats have dropped their last two outings by scores of 30-35 to Elon and 27-59 to Lenoir Rhyne. The Indians, probably the surprise team in the Conference, have three victories under their belt. The wins have come over Concord, Guilford, and Elon. Newberry has lost to Appalach ian, Catawba, Lenoir Rhyne, Wofford, and Jacksonville State. The Indians will need an inspired defensive effort to stop the running of Catamount fullback David Lomax and quarter back Don Dalton. Last week aganst LR, Lomax rushed 22 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns. In 6 games, Lomax has rushed for 639 yards and is only 80 yards short of the school single-season rushing record which he set last year. Dalton did not play in last week’s contest against LR, but s he thrilled a homecoming crowd the week before by throwing four touchdown passes against Emory and Henry. His pri mary receiver is sophomore Woody Woodruff who has caught 24 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns in five games. The Indians will be led by the hard-nosed running of their All-Everything tailbaik George Taylor and the passing of sophomore quarterback Gary Welchel. Taylor picked up 142 yards in the Elon victory, raising his season total to 514 yards. Fullbacks Jimmy Fulton and Don Burton along with alter nate tailback Jolly Hallman also will be called upon for run ning duties. Through the air, Welchel has completed 50 of 115 for 699 yards and five touchdowns. Split-end Roger Hazel has made 21 catches for 421 yards and two touchdowns, and wingback Bob Nash has a total of 11 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Hazel has been a fine punter throughout the season. He has punted 53 times, the most among NAIA punters, for 2227 yards and a fine 43.8 average, which according to last week’s NAIA statistics places him in a tie for third place in the na tion.
