While this study points out fcn interesting parallel between non-belt use and one-car accid ent fatalities, few conclusive deductions can be drawn at the present time. This evidence suggests that there is a recklessness about one-car accident victims which makes them shun safety belt tae while at the same time makes them drive too fast fol conditions or otherwise danger- ously. But it could also mean that the number of seat belt usera in South Carolina is very low and that only a small percent age of the driving public^ faith fully wear seat belts. There may be a large number of dri vers who never wear seat belts but who, nevertheless, escape serious accident. Most of the 26 fatalities oc curred during the hours of darkness. There were four in Anderson county, three in Ai ken, two in Colleton, Green ville, Greenwood, and Lexing ton, and one in Charleston, Chester, Newberry, Richland, Union, Kershaw, Darlington, Spartanburg, Chesterfield, and Marlboro. There were 3 others in which seat belts use was not determined. In the light of this finding, it would be wise for each mo torist to buckle up for safety every time he rides in a motor vehicle. Observance is sponsored by Exchange Club Whereas, the Exchange Club of Newberry is sponsoring “One Nation Under God” month dur ing November, and Whereas, the objective of this observance is to inspire and nurture greater respect and understanding for the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag vchich contains the phrase “one nation under God”; to increase the use of and make more impressive the recitation of the Pledge in the schools, at group meetings and public functions; to encourage regular attendance at religious services by Americans of all faiths; to promote Thanksgiving Day as a religious holiday to prayer fully thank God for his bounty, especially the blessings of lib erty and justice bestowed on our country; and to undertake year around activities to in spire in all our countrymen the highest moral and ethical prin ciples, the spirit of brotherhood and a sense of individual res ponsibility and faith in God essential to the preservation of Freedom and the American way of life; Now Therefore, I, Clarence A. Shealy, Jr., Mayor of The City of Newberry, do hereby proclaim the month of Novem ber as “One Nation Under God” month, and urge each citizen to join with the Exchange Club in taking stock of his spiritual resources, strengthening h i s faith, and shaping his life to the highest standards of moral and ethical behavior. WITH MEN IN THE SERVICES PHU THANK, VIETNAM.— Army Specialist Four Edward Hunter, an Army clothing and textile repair man, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hunter Jr., Route 4, Newberry, arrived in Vietnam October 12 with other members of the 311th Medical Hospital (Field), a former Ar my Reserve unit from Ohio. The 311th, last stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., was called to active duty early this year as part of President John son’s program to increase man power strength. The unit is now located near Phu Thanh as a part of the 44th Medical Brigrade. PLEIKU. VIETNAM—Masso Cannon, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie S. Mass.., Route 3, Newberry, was promoted to Army Specialist four Oct. 28 near Pleiku. Vietnam, where he is serving with the 14th Ar tillery as a supply clerk. NONE OF 26 VICTIMS WEARING SEAT BELTS The amazing parallel be tween auto seat belt non-use and one-car accident deaths continued during October and the first week of November, the State Higlrway Department has reported. Ac ident records indicate that in 26 one-car fatalities the \ '•tims, either driver or passenger, failed to wear a seat belt when the accident oc curred. This is a 100 per cent record of failure to wear a seat belt.
