Nov. 3, 11:40 a.m.—The New berry Fire Dept, answered a call to the home of Mary Cole man, 825 Burton St. Minor damage to an electric range. Nov. 3, 12:57 p.m.—Corn field fire on property of Allen Bow ers near Silverstreet. Damage, .1 acre burned. Alarm answered by Silverstreet Fire Dept. United Fund goal not yet reached Newberry County United Fund pledges and collections thru yesterday totaled $21,000, ac cording to D. B. Brittain, cam paign chairman. The goal for this year’s drive is $37,000. “We still have two divisions which have not reported,” Mr. Brittain said, “but we don’t ex pect these to total more than $5000. Also, some divisions have not reported final figures. Nevertheless, we would not be honest if we didn’t say our res ponse thus far has been dis appointing.” The campaign chairman list ed this breakdown of goals and pledges by divisions: Division Goal Collected Industrial $12,000 $8,928 Commercial 10,000 5,024 Professional 3,000 2,100 Residential 2,000 1,325 Pub. Book fair to be at academy sponsored by parents of New berry Academy will be held in the Academy auditorium Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8th and 9th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All books to be shown will be for direct sale. No orders will be taken except on special request. The Fair is being held in connection with the observance of National Education Week and National Book week. Those in charge of the Fair remind parents and friends of the Academy that books are excellent for Christmas and other gifts. The public is cor dially invited to attend the Fair. Proceeds will be used to purchase volumes for the Ac ademy library. CAPE MAY, N. J.—Seaman Apprentice James B. West II, USCG, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. West of Route two, Prosperity, was graduated from basic training at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, Cape May, N. J. A graduate of Mid-Carolina High school in Prosperity, Sea man Apprentice West entered the service in July 1968. tne National Guard Armory at 7:30 o’clock. The speaker for the evening will be W. C. Plowden Jr. of New Zion. Mr. Plowden is a graduate of The Citadel, class of 1939. He entered the army in 1941 as Second Lieutenant and served 32 months in the C. B. I. theatre and was separated from the service in 1946 as Lt. Colonel. He was the youngest Lt. Colonel in that Theatre in 1945. He is an automobile dealer, owning and operating dealer ships in New Zion, Lake City and Pamlico. He also owns and operates W. C. Plowden Jr In surance Agency, New Zion. He is Past Post, District and Zone Commander of the Am erican Legion and Past Depart ment Commander of the Amer ican Legion of South Carolina. He is at present time chairman of the Americanism Committee of the Department of S. C. and RE-ELECT W.
