Haltiwanger,
Shealy are
honored
Dr. J. A. Shealy, retired Lu
theran minister and now a
Leesville businessman, was
honored at Newberry College
homecoming ceremonies Satur
day as the College’s outstanding
alumnus of the year.
A second plaque honoring the
year’s “outstanding non-alum
nus” went to Deems Haltiwan
ger of Columbia, founder and
retired president of Richland
Shale Products Co.
Homecoming Queen, elected
by the student body, was re
vealed during the Newberry-
Guilford football game to be
senior Peggy Buckheister. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
J. G. Buckheister of Charles
ton.
Dr. Shealy and Haltiwanger
were honored for their service
to church and community,
their professional distinction,
and their support of Newberry
College. The awards, to be
given annually, were establish
ed earlier this year by New
berry’s alumni association.
Dr. Shealy, a 1913 graduate,
served a number of pastorates
in Virginia and Tennessee be
fore retiring to Leesville be
cause of ill health in 1937. He
launched a prospering retail
furniture business there, and
has continued in the ministry
as a supply pastor.
He has served Lutheran
churches in Mt. Hebron, Union,
Swansea, Saluda and elsewhere
and has become known as a
“building pastor,” leading in
the construction of many new
church structures.

Leesville and is a member of
the college’s board of trustees.
Another son, Armand, is pas
tor of Orangeburg Lutheran
church. Two alumni daughters
are Mrs. Robert Logan of
Gratz, Pa., and Miss Miriam
Shealy of Leesville. A third son,
Marvin, died several years ago.
Dr. Shealy received an hon
orary degree from Newberry
College several years ago.
Deems Haltiwanger, a »Col
umbia native who attended
Clemson college, has been active
in Newberry College affairs for
many years. He also has been
a leader in Lutheran church af
fairs and serves on the board
of Lowman Home in Columbia.
Haltiwanger received the Al
gernon Sydney Sullivan award
two years ago as an outstand
ing friend of Newberry college.
Recently he has been active in
support of a fund-raising cam
paign for the college’s pro
posed new music building.

ers that be” to find out how
much truth there was to the
rumors of superhighways, etc,
etc, proposed for the city.
I learned that there is in the
planning stage the construction
or widening of two major
thoroughfares, designed to al
leviate the traffic problem now
facing downtown Newberry.
This is just one phase of the
proposal to maintain a better
traffic flow, as I understand it.
Complete details of the
planning have not yet been
published because tncy aren’t
quite complete; however, I un
derstand that a meeting on
preliminary plans will bi held
this week and that the proposal
will be presented to the public
in the near future.
I’m sure that anyone who
drives in noon, 5:00 p.m. or
week-end traffic downtown
realizes that something must
be done if downtown merchants
are to continue in business.
Whether what is planned is
the right thing or not remains
Marines die
in crash on
Interstate 26

Two U. S. Marine Corps cor
porals were killed when their
car ran off 1-26, struck a sign
post and overturned several
times about 8 miles west of
here at 10:45 p.m. Friday.
Coroner George R. Summer
identified the victims as SpL
Ronald L. Webb, 21, of Lub
bock, Texas, and Cpl. James
S. Carter, 22, of East St. Louis,
111. Both were stationed at
Camp Lejeune, N. C.

The two men left Camp Le-
juene Thursday and had plan
ned a trip to Florida. No in
quest is planned.

campaign that approval of this
issue did not mean an increase
in taxes at this time but was
for the purpose of allowing the
board to make plans. At such
time plans for future buildings
are decided upon, voters will
decide whether the leeway they
have given will be inplemented
by a bond issu.
The final unofficial vote on
the School amendment was, in
favor, 6329; opposed, 3724.
