C. The game is a highlight of Newberry’s 1968 Homecoming. Time is set for 2 p.m. in Setzler Field. Thus far, the Quakers and the Indians are identical in a number of respects. Guilford is under the tutelage of a rookie coach, Bod Lord, as are the Indians under the leadership of new head mentor Fred Herren. Both squads have identical 1-5 marks. Guilford will be starting rookie quarterback Charlie Christian and the Tribe will counter with Gary Welchel, a sophomore who didn’t play last season. Both teams are planning to start seven freshmen on the defensive unit. Guilford started out like a house on fire, blanking Washington and Lee 28-0, and since then has lost five in succession. Elon, using its single wing offense, came out on top 21-0. Western Carolina romped to a 35-7 score and Samford edged by, 26-23. The powerful Lenoir Rhyne Bears smashed Guilford 49-7, and Pres byterian put a damper on the Quakers’ home coming last Saturday, 21-7. The Indians lost their first three contests to Appalachian, Catawba, and Lenoir Rhyne be fore getting into the win column with a victory over Concord. Wofford and Jacksonville State have since handed the Tribe their fourth and fifth defeats. The Quaker offensive unit is led by the pass ing of senior Make Boccuzzi and freshman Charlie Christian. Boccuzzi is 24 of 69 on the year for 361 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target is flanker Make Hunt who has reeled in 19 catches for 314 yards. On the ground, sophomore tailback Harold Allen and fullback Larry Funkhowser are the work horses. Allen has rushed for 326 yards in 73 carries for a 4.5 average and Funkhowser is rushing at a 3.3 clip.
