A separate ballot will be of
fered for a local constitutional
amendment, which, if approved,
would raise the debt limit of
the Newberry County school
district from eight to 30 per
cent of assessed valuation of
taxable property.
Statewide constitutional a-
mendments will all appear on
one ballot. Briefly they are:
Number 1: Amending the
Constitution to allow establish
ment of regional councils of
governnment.
Number 2: Amending the
Constitution to provide that all
or part of increase in license
fees or taxes imposed after Ju
ly 1, 1969 on the sale of alco
holic beverages be applied to
the treatment and rehabilitation
of alcohol and drug addicts and
for the prevention of alcohol
and drug addiction.
Number 3: Amending the
Constitution to add continuous
separation for a period of at
least three years as an addi
tional ground for divorce.
Number 4: Amending the
Constitution to provide a sim
pler form for amending the
Constitution.
There are also local amend
ments pertaining to other coun
ties but which are voted on
statewide. These will be on a
separate ballot.
Mrs. Leavell
rites Thursday
Mrs. Kate Folger Leavell,
86, widow of Robert Evans
Leavell, died Wednesday at the
Newberry County Memorial
Hospital after a lingering ill
ness.
Mrs. Leavell was born in
Pickens, the daughter of the
late Alfred Robert Newton and
Cody Looper Folger. She was
a life member of the Calvin
Crozier Chapter of the U. D. C.
She is survived by one daugh
ter, Mrs. Ruth L. Dickert of
Newberry, and one sister, Mrs.
E. E. Caldwell of Tampa, Fla.
Funeral services were con
ducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at
the Whitaker Funeral Home by
the Rev. Anderson Bass. In
terment was in Rosemont Cem
etery.

MEETS TUESDAY

4:00 p.m. at the home of Mrs.

8. Active member of the Whitmire Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and
a trustee.
9. County Attorney for the past eight years.
10. Past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
12. Director of the Newberry County Development Board, serving as chairman for
three consecutive years, during which time three new industries located in
Newberry County creating more than 1,000 new jobs.
13. Director and Vice Chairman of the Whitmire United Fund.
14. A life membership Mason and an officer of Hejaz Shrine Temple.
15. Past President and member for fifteen years of Newberry County Shrine
Club.
16. Member of Newberry County Municipal Association.
17. Director and Secretary of Newberry County’s “J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home.”
