NOTICE OF\niRY DRAWING We, thk undersigned Jury Commissioners of Newberry County, shall on Wednesday, November 13, 1968 at 9 o’clock A. M. in the office of the Clerk of Court, openly and publicly, draw the names of Forty men and Women to serve as Petit Jurors for the court of General Sessions (Criminal) which will convene in the Newberry Coun ty Court House on November 25, 1968 at ten o’clock. Ray Dawkins Treasurer Exchangites urged to vote for amendment October 22nd., the Exchange Club of Newberry held a two- part program at its Lake Mur ray Clubhouse. Exchange Pres ident Stewart Taylor presided. Paul Savko, representing the Newberry County Development Board gave reasons why Ex change members and others should support the forthcoming election on constitutional a- mendments for Newberry Coun ty. Mr. Savko emphasized that this does not mean an increase in taxes. Pamphlets showing some of the dilapidated condi tions existing at some of the county schools and additional information for approving this revision of constitution were distributed. The second part of the pro gram was the presentation of the annual award of the trophy and badge for the “FIREMAN OF THE YEAR”. This finalized the annual observance of Fire Prevention activities by the club. This award is given by the the Exchange Club of Newberry to a member of the Newberry County Firemen and Rescue Association chosen from nom inees submitted by members of the association. Lewis Lee, a member of both the Exchange Club and the Newberry Fire Department made the presen tation. Exchangite • Lee made some preliminary remarks concerning the reason for this award. He stated that this is dons to re cognize those men who not only do a good job but go “that se cond mile” or give “a strong second effort” to their endeav ors over and above what is us ually expected of them. He had high praise for the service be ing rndered to residents of New berry County by all members of the Fire and Rescue Depart ments. Lee then named Henry Dodgen as recipient of the tro phy and badge designating him as “FIREMAN OF THE YEAR” for 1968. Mr. Dodgen is a driver for Friendly Fire Department and has been associated with this department since its organiza tion in 1962. He has served as Vice President and Second As sistant Chief before his pro motion to his present rank of First Assistant Fire Chief. Mrs. Dodgen is the former Celia Epting of Newberry and they have one daughter, Laur- rie Anne. Chief Dodgen is a machinist and mechanic at New berry Auto Parts where he has been employed for the past 12 years. He is a member and ser ves as Sunday School teacher at West End Baptist Church. The Newberry County Fire mens Association was repre sented at this meetincr by Chief son, Bush River Fire Depart ment; and Captain “Tuffy” Millstead, .Fire Prevention Bu reau of the Newberry Fire De partment and also last year’s winner of this award. Exchange President Taylor reported that the operation of the food booth at the Newberry- Saluda Fair was very sucessful and expressed appreciation to all members and their wives who assisted with this fund raising affair. He stated that funds from this food booth will help support additional com munity projects. Lonnie Kinard won the attendance prize and the meeting was adjourned. Callie Knight service held Gallic Ezell Knight, 56, died Tuesday at his home on Mt. Bethel-Garmany highway. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Blanche Starnes Knight of Lancaster; his wife, Mrs. Laura Jane Pardue Knight; a son, Donald Lee Knight of An derson; four daughters, Mrs. Charles Riddle, Mrs. Jack Kes- ler, Mrs. Roger Trammell and Mrs. Robert Ware of Newber ry; four brothers and two sis ters, all of Lancaster, and 12 grandchildren.
