Educator dies
in Georgia
Funeral services for Alvin A.
Singley were conducted at the
graveside in Marietta National
cemetery Monday by the Rev.
Eugene Harrison.
Mr. Singley, 71, died Thurs
day at the Veterans Adminis
tration Center, Domiciliary Di
vision at Dublin, Ga.
Surviving are his widow,
Kathleen Reynolds Singley; two
daughters, Mrs. Charles W.
Gill of Alexandria, Va., and
Mrs. Marion S. Sturgeon, of
Charlotte, N. C.; a sister, Mrs.
Palmer E. Krantz; a brother,
John C. Singley.
Mr. Singley was born near
Prosperity, a son of John Jacob
and Nancy Hawkins Singley.
He was a graduate of Pros
perity High school and earned
an A.B. degree from Newberrjf
College. He received an M.A.
degree from the University of
South Carolina and did post
graduate work at Peabody Col
lege in Nashville, Tenn., Duke
University and the University
of North Carolina.
He was a member of Saint
Paul’s Lutheran church in Col
umbia.
Mr. Singley was a teacher
and college professor, having
taught in this county, served
as superintendent of Schools at
Blaney, as principal of Lees-
ville Elementary school, and as
assistant principal at the Logan
Elementary school in Columbia.
McCarley rites
in Baltimore
Funeral services for John W.
McCarley, 72, of Baltimore, Md.
who died last Sunday, were
conducted in Baltimore Wed
nesday.
He was a native of this coun
ty, a son of the late Sidney B.
and Ada Riser McCarley. He
was a retired employee of the
DuPont Chemical Co., a World
War I veteran and a member of
the ARP church. He had lived
in Newberry until he moved
to Baltimore 35 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Agnes McCarley; a son, John
W. McCarley of Camden; two
sisters, Mrs. Hattie Bonds of
Clinton and Miss Rachael Mc
Carley of Whitmire; two bro
thers, I. C. McCarley and Clin
ton and Alec McCarley, Whit
mire.
Retired Army
colonel dies
Col. Eual W. Culbertson U-
SA, Ret.) of Petersburg, Va.,
South Carolina native and a
former public school teacher
and administrator in Newberry
county, died at the Fort Lee
base hospital Friday night af
ter & sudden attack.
Funeral services were held
at Ft. Lee chapel Sunday. In
terment was at Forest Lawn
cemetery, Charlotte, N. C.
Survivors are his widow, the
former Miss Nellie Koon, a
native of Newberry; a sister,
Mrs. A. B. Heywood of Char
lotte.
Col. Culbertson was a grad
uate of Newberry College and
did teaching, coaching and ad
ministrative work in the pub
lic schools of this county. Prior
to U. S. involvement in World
War II, he was called to active
duty with a unit of the South
Carolina National Guard.
UF progress
report given
Newberry County’s 1968
United Fund campaign is a-
bout 40 percent completed, ac
cording to figures presented at
a breakfast meeting of cam-
oaigners Tuesday at the Com
munity Hall. Campaign Chair
man D. B. Brittain reported
that pledges and collections
thus far total about $15,000.
This year’s goal is $37,000.
In his remarks Brittain ex
pressed confidence that the
goal would be reached but em
phasized M all of us must make
pertain that each individual
and firm in the county is given
an opportunity to make a
pledge to this united county
effort.”

and have not reported should
contact any campaign worker
or United Fund headquarters
to have their card picked up.
