Behavior May Signal
Need For Consultation
How docs one know when I'f
should (onsnlt ;i psvihiatrisl.-'
To(la\ \ Health, the magazine
of the \meriian Medical Associa
tion. reports that most people who,,
should ( insult a psvahiatrist are
likely to consider themselves as
someone not needing his services.
Many shun the psvehiatrist,
the \MA savs, because they have
the distorted concept that people
who are under psychiatric rare are
"crazy.”

Psychiatrists arc physicians
with a special training through
which they are able to help peo
ple with mental illness or emo
tional problems, even as other
pTiysicians arc qualified to assist in
physical illness. Often physical and
mental ills are closely related.
Depression, or what wc could
call the blues, is frequently an
early sign of what can become a
disabling mental illness. Likewise,
excitement and overactivity — al
though often completely normal-
form an abnormal sign when they
occur in the wrong place or for
the wrong reason.
Other suggestive symptoms in
elude tantrums and exaggerated
expressions of anger, hysterical at
tacks, unfounded fear, and guilt
feelings which exist without an
acceptable reason.
Any of these- would justify dis
cussing the* need for psychiatric
consultation with your physician.
