RENEGADE OF THE WEEK
8h
Roger Hazel, 6’2”, 190-pound junior from Saluda, S. C.,
has been named Newberry Offensive Player of the Week
for his fine showing against Concord College.
“We are very pleased with Roger,” says Coach Her-
ren. “He is a very fine pass receiver and a phenomenal
punter. He has definitely helped our ballclub this sea
son,” Herren added.
Hazel won the honor on the basis of his four receptions
against Concord which netted 113 yards. Three of his re
ceptions went for 18, 37 and 43 yards and set up all three
second half scores. On the season, Roger has reeled in 15
in four games for 261 yards and one touchdown.
Hazel has also continued his fine punting and is in sec
ond place in the NAIA standings. Against Concord, Haz
el’s first two punts were for only 36 and 34 yards but his
third boot went 61 yards, his longest this season. Against
the Mountain Lions, he booted four times for 186 yards
and on the season he has punted 25 times for 1,145 yards
and a very impressive 45.8 average.
PURCELLS
"Your Private Bankers”
Eddie Stone, a familiar face
in the opponents’ backfield,
has been named Renegade of
the Week by the Newberry
Indians coaching staff. This
marks the third time in four
games the 5'10”, 180-pounder
from Belton-Honea Path, has
won the honor.
“Our plans were to break
Eddie in easy,” says head
mentor Fred Herren, “but be
cause of an early injury to of
fensive center Bill Miracle,
we had to move one of our
linebackers to the center po-
sition which left a vacancy
at the linebacker slot,” he ad
ded.
“From the Appalachian
game, Eddie has continued to
improve, evidenced by his be
ing named Renegade three
times,” Herren concluded.
Stone, relatively small as
college linebackers go, has
good quickness and excellent
speed to overcome his size.
Stone won the honor on the
basis of nine individual tack
les, eight asists, coupled with
a blocked p.a.t. and a blocked
punt.
