Give report
of national
convention
Members of the American
Legion Auxiliary, at their Oct.
3rd meeting, heard glowing re
ports from Mrs. W. Roy An
derson and Mrs. P. K. Harmon,
who attended the National
Convention in New Orleans re
cently.
The two delegates told of
the good work that is being
done all over the U. S. by the
American Legion and its aux
iliary. The National President
wore a gold colored dress in
commemoration of the golden
anniversary of the organiza
tion of the Legion. The Nat
ional Commander told interest
ing facts about the work that
is being done in Malaysia.
Mrs. Harmon told of hearing
the speeches of the candidates
for President of the U. S. while
they were in New Orleans. The
next National convention will
be in Atlanta, Ga., August 22-
28, 1969. It is hoped that many
members from Newberry will
attend. Mrs. R. M. Stork, nat
ional executive committeewom-
an from South Carolina, was
appointed National Girls State
chairman by the national Pres
ident.
The October meeting was
held in the home of Mrs. Olin
Wessinger. Associate hostesses
were Mrs. T. P. Crooks, Mrs.
Elton Summer. Mrs. Estelle
Taylor, Mrs. Homer Long and
Mrs. Forrest Miller.
Mrs. M. F. Bowler, president,
called the meeting to order and
presided over the business ses
sion. Reports of officers and
chairmen were heard.
Mrs. Ralph B. Baker, nation
al security chairman, invited
members to attend the Civic
League meeting on October 29
at which time a special Civil
Defense program will be given.
All members were urged to
attend.
Mrs. P. K. Harmon, music
chairman, led in the singing of
the hymn of the month, “How
Great Thou Art.”
The membership chairman,
Mrs. J. F. Hawkins, reported
that the Auxiliary had 14 8
members, three above the quo
ta. On September 28, a mem
bership meeting was held in
Columbia at the Wade Hamp
ton hotel. Those attending from
the local unit were Mrs. Bow
ler, Mrs. Anderson, Miss Sudie
Dennis, Mrs. J. F. Hawkins,
Mrs. Elizabeth Carbosco, Mrs.
Olin Wessinger, Mrs. Oscar R.
Summer Sr., and Miss Grace
Summer. Miss Dennis and Mrs.
Hawkins gave interesting high
lights of the day’s meeting.
There were eight “go-getters”
who received gifts for having
collected dues from 15 or more
members. The unit was pre
sented a citation for getting
its quota.
Miss Grace Summer, 2nd his
torian, gave out the yearbooks
for the year.
Zone 5 meeting will be held
at the Legion Hut in North
Augusta on November 2. Those
interested in going are asked
to contact Mrs. Bowler.
The Gift Show at Veterans
Hospital in Columbia will be
open from December 9-13.
Several members are planning
to go down and help with this
important project of the Aux
iliary.
The Auxiliary agreed to as
sist the Legion with a booth at
the County Fair.
Mrs. Ray Nobles has been
appointed Girls State chairman.
Girls State will be held at the
University of South Carolina
next June 2-8.
Delicious refreshments were
served by the hostesses. The
meeting was closed by mem
bers praying together the
Lord’s prayer.
