He assumed his new duties in March, 1968, after ser ving as offensive line coach at Furman University under coach Bob King for three years. Herren’s signing ended a search which began last December, when Harvey B. Kirkland resigned after 10 years as head coach. Herren is a native of Georgia, a fact evidenced by his long Southern drawl. Born July 4, 1936 at Atlanta, he attend ed Campbell-Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Ga., where he began his suc cessful football career and won honor able mention as a high school All-Am erican. He continued his education at the University of Chattanooga, where he starred in football as a halfback and also was a three-event man (dashes and broad jump) in track. He captained the track team as a senior. He graduat ed in 1958 and later returned to the University of Chattanooga, where he earned a master's degree in education in 1964. Herren had seven years of high school coaching before joining the Furman staff three years ago. He was an assist ant at Jefferson, Ga., from 1958 to 1961, when he became athletic director and head football coach at Gordon Lee High School at Chicamauga, Ga. In addition to his football duties at Furman, Her ren was freshman baseball coach. His wife is the former Lucy Field of Decatur, Ga. They have a daughter, Beth, 5, and a son, Greg, 3. STEVE ROBERTSON . LINE COACH Steve Robertson, an outstanding cen ter for the Indians from 1953 through 1956, returns to the Newberry College campus to assume new duties as line coach for the 1968 season. He joined the staff shortly after the signing of Head Coach Herren and will be offen sive line coach and also tutor the inter ior defensive alignment. Born June 23, 1934, and raised in Greer, S. C., Robertson gained All-Con ference and All-State honors as a New berry College lineman.. He received his B.S. degree in Education from New berry and was an assistant to Art Baker at Eau Claire High School, Columbia, S. C., until 1965 when he took over the reins and built an outstanding record. He guided’ the Shamrocks to a 28-4-1 record in his three seasons at the helm. Eau Claire went through 11 games un defeated last fall to win the state AAA Championship and Robertson was named South Carolina High School Coach of the Year. Robertson is married to the former Linda Lou Gossett of Vero Beach, Fla. They have a son, Ron Wallace, one year old. HORACE TURBEVILLE BACKFIELD COACH AND HEAD BASEBALL COACH Horace Turbeville, the spry young native of Camden, S. C., begins his ninth season on the Newberry coaching staff. He started in 1960 after gradua tion from Newberry, where he had been an outstanding back before being side lined with a leg injury. He attended Clemson University before transferring to Newberry, and played with the Tig ers in the Orange Bowl at quarterback. The spring season finds Coach Tur- beyille on the diamond. Beginning his third campaign as head baseball men tor, Turbeville has a number of letter- men and some promising sophs who should bring Newberry into contention in the conference this coming spring. Turbeville is married to the former Kate Lee of Camden, S. C., and they have three daughters: Melisa, 8; Ally- son, 6; and Cynthia, 2. HAROLD WHEELER DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD COACE Harold Wheeler, an aide at the Uni versity of Georgia for the past two seasons, is the third new addition to the Newberry College coaching staff. A 26-year-old native of Missouri, Wheeler has been working on a mas ter’s degree in physical education at the University of Georgia while help ing to coach the Georgia freshmen. He handled the frosh offensive backfield at Athens in 1966 and coached the de fense last year. Wheeler was an all-around athlete at West Plains High School in Missouri. At Southwest Missouri State College he was a football standout, lettering four years as a defensive corner man. He earned a bachelor of science degree in education in 1964 and was a high school football coach and mathematics teacher at Mountain View, Mo., for two years before coming to Georgia.
