Koch, generally listed as a wingback, is small as college backs go. He’s 5’9” and 160 pounds. But his competitive spirit has won him the starting spot as the defense team’s warrior. That’s what he’s called in the Indian’s system. Other clubs labled the position variously as “rover” or “mon ster.” Nichols also a defensive starter, at right end. He was a standout through his career at Newberry High, and started working out With the Indian^ during 1968 spring practice, while still in high school. Freshman or not, the 195-pound six-footer showed too much moxie to be kept out of the starting lineup this fall. 1212 MAIN ST.
