PANCAKE SUPPER FRIDAY NIGHT The Newberry Kiwanis Club will serve a pancake supper on Friday night, September 27 at Speers Street School auditor ium from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m., prior to the football game be tween the Union High Yellow- jackets and the Newberry High Bulldogs. Proceeds will be used to aid a Newberry county student at tending the freshman year at Newberry College. Tickets may be obtained from Belk-Beard, Chapman- Hawkins, Nichols Studio, Kap pa Delta Sorority or any mem ber of the Kiwanis Club, or at the school on September 27. WITH MEN IN THE SERVICES U. S. COMBAT AIR FOR CES, Vietnam—Airman First Class Joseph A. Gilbert, son of Mrs. B. D. Gilbert of 2404 Main street, is on duty at Cam Ranh Bay AB, Vietnam. Airman Gilbert, an aircraft mechanic, is a member of the Military Aircraft Command in support of the Pacific Air Forces. Before his arrival in Vietnam, he was assigned to McClellan AFB, Calif. The Airman, a 1964 graduate of Newbery High School, has studied at Columbia Commer cial College. LONG BINH, Vietnam—Army Private First Class John F. Byrd, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Byrd, Peak, was assigned as a light vehicle operator with the 92nd Engineer Battalion near Long Binh, August 14. U. S. ARMY, VIETNAM — Army Private First Class David Grey Jr., 29, whose parents live on Route 2, Newberry, was as signed August 24 to the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s 50th In fantry in Vietnam. Girls report on Girls State at University The American Legion Aux iliary met on September 5th in the home of Mrs. Harry Epting. In the absence of the president, the meeting was presided over by the vice president, Mrs. Alice Nobles. After the usual ritualistic service, Mrs. Nobles presented the two Girls Staters who were sponsored by the Auxiliary, Miss Trudy Todd and Miss Mary Hart Jordan. They gave most interesting and inform ative reports of the week they spent at Girls State at the Un iversity of South Carolina. Reports of officers and chair men were heard. The Auxiliary was proud to note that three members of the unit are now on the executive board of the De partment of South Carolina. They are: Mrs. M. F. Bowler, Americanism Chairman and 5th District President; Mrs. W. Roy Anderson, Child Welfare Chair man; Miss Grace Summer, mem ber of the Permanent Rules Committee. Mrs. Bowler and Mrs. W. Roy Anderson attended the ex ecutive board meeting in Colum bia on August 10. .Mrs. Bowler also attended the State Con vention in Charleston. Mrs. B. B. Sprouse informed the members of the important meeting on membership which is to be held at the Wade Hamp ton Hotel in Columbia on Sat urday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 a. m. Those interested in going are asked to call Mrs. Bowler. It was noted that this is member ship month and the Auxiliary wishes to secure as many mem berships as possible by Sept. 25 so it will have a good report at the meeting. Mrs. Nobles closed the meeting by the members praying toge ther the Lord’s Prayer. New Addresses Mr. and Mrs. Richard Murtha have moved to 1221 Chapman street. Mr. and Mrs. James Turner are now residing at 2047 Pied mont street. Mr. and Mrs. James Camp bell have moved to 1820 Lu ther street. Carpenter. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Bailey have moved to Apt. 2, 19 3 4 Johnstone street. “PlebeWeek” at The Citadel Cadet Jerry Newton Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Mit- •hell, 1332 Milligan St., Cadet James Powers Hickson, Jr., son of Mrs. Florence M. Hick son, 1134 Hunt St., Cadet Bob by Louis Pitts, son of Mrs. Bar bara F. Pitts, 2201 Harper St., and Cadet Steven Preston Bodie, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Bodie, 403 Rodelsperger St., were a- mong some 600 freshmen who completed “Plebe Week” at the Citadel on September 9. Up perclassmen registered Septem ber 10 and began classes on September 11. Following traditions evolved at the military college since its founding in 1842, freshmen ca dets are indoctrinated during a week of concentrated training prior to the return of upper classmen. This enables the new cadets to take their places as members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets when it forms upon the arrival of the cadets pessary to assist each new ca det in acquitting himself well in the classroom or on the par ade ground.
