Guilty pleas
taken during
crminal court
The first two days of (’oiiit
..f (ieneral Sessions were taken
this week to hear guilty pleas.
Honorable Robert Wesley
Hayes of Rock Hill, is presiding
over the September term of
crir. inal court.
On Monday, two Newberry
County Negro men entered
guilty pleas to manslaughter
charges. Robert Franklin was
sentenced to nine years impris
onment and Joe Eddie Sims
received an eight-year sentence.
The two men originally were
charged with murder in the
Dec. Lb’i D.a'iT shooting death of
Jame- Williams, 21, Negro.
Williams was -hot in the neck
with a .L'2 caliber bullet during
an argument among the three
men.

City Planning in
Second Stage
Newberry band
prepares for
contests
The Newberry High Schoo.

Miss Lorraine Paris, has been
working - since the middle >f
August, preparing for parades,
contests, and football appear
ances this year.
The first outing for the band
was at Lexington when 1 the
Newberry High Bulldogs opened
the football season. The band
appeared last Friday night at
Setzler Field to help cheer on
the Bulldogs and will appear
again this Friday night with
a new routine, “Word From
the Sponsor,” which will fea
ture TV show and commercial
themes with appropriate for
mat ions.
While preparing to entertain
Newberry fans, the hand is also
getting ready to take part m
the Fire Prevention parade on
October Xth. On October lath,
the band will participate in the
Marching - Band contest at th
Piedmont Interstate Fair in
Spartanburg. Newberry cap-
t ui ed - ecoiid place in this con-
test last year. Finallv on the

of the Association for a Greater
Newberry, announced today
that the association had enter
ed into a contract with Adley
Associates, Inc. of Atlanta, Ga.
for Stage II of a central busi
ness development program for
downtown Newberry. The study
area will be composed of an
area bounding on Scott’s creek
on the North, Calhoun street on
the east, Boundary street on
the South, and the railroad on
the west. The Association ini
tially began planning such a
program over two years ago
while it was still known as
the Newberry Merchants’ As
sociation. The name was chang
ed last year to The Association
for a Greater Newberry to
more accurately reflect the
aims and policies of the a-so
cint ion. There are now over
S5 members.
S'ae/e II will be aceomplished
over a period of approximatolv
ton months. Itoms to be includ
ed in planning are such things
as a complete inventory of the
area insofar as type of use of
all land, structural conditions
of all buildings, and number
and location of all parking
areas. A plan for traffic, cir
culation, and parking will lie
proposed. This will include a
thoroughfare plan feeding a
downtown circulation system
which will expedite the flow of
traffic to, from, and within
the central business district. A
plan for physical improvement
of the area will be proposed
which will include recommen
dation.- for developing under
used areas, suggestions for
changes in the outward appear
ance of a selected block front,
changes in street functions
which will expedite the flow of
traffic within the area, and
facilitate easy access to the
existing and proposed parking
areas. The final part of the
program will bo a plan for
participation and implementa
tion of the recommendations ar
rived during the planning.
There will he a number of
meetings scheduled during the
program to keep those concern
ed informed of the progress be
ing made. It is anticipated that
the first meeting will he held
the first part of October.

plan will In' coordinated with
the City Planning Gommission,
the Mayor, and Gity Gounod,
the County Supervisor and the
Commissioners, and the County
Planning Commission. o that

plished by these group- will not

Is wounded
in Vietnam
Word was received Tuesday
night from the Adjutant Gen
eral’s office by Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Gulelasure, notifying
them that their son, PFC Fran
cis ‘Butch’ Gulelasure, was ser
iously wounded on the Kith of
September. The injuries oecur-
ed when PFC Gulelasure was on
combat operation with his unit
and they engaged a hostile force
in battle.
He is now hospitalized in
Vietnam.

the Newberry High School cafeteria. Dave L. Hayes, co-
