WITH U. S. COMBAT AIR
FORCES, Vietnam— U. S. Air
Force First Lieutenant Jake S.
Counts, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward W. Counts, Brown St.,
Prosperity, has received the
Air Medal at Vung Tau Army
Airfield, Vietnam.
Lt. Counts., a pilot in a unit
of the Pacific Air Forces, was
decorated for his outstanding
airmanship and courage on suc
cessful and important missions
under hazardous conditions.
A 1961 graduate of Mid-Car
olina High School, the lieuten
ant received his B. S. degree
in chemical engineering from
the University of South Caro
lina in 1966 and was commis
sioned upon completion of the
Air Force Reserve Officers
Training Corps program. He is
a member of Phi Kappa Sigma.
USS VULCAN AT SEA—
Machinery Repairman Third
Class Larry S. Kyzer, 23, son
of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Kyzer
of 403 Crosson St., operates a
vertical turret lathe to smooth
down a plate for a Navy gun
mount. He is serving aboard
the repair ship Vulcan, which
is a flagship for Commander,
Atlantic Fleet Service Force.
The Vulcan provides the fleet
with practically all the in
dustrial potential of a ship
yard. The ship’s repair person
nel, all trained technicians,
have many years of ship repair
and conversion experience.
A graduate of Newberry high
school, Petty Officer Kyzer en
tered the service in September
1966.

FORCES, Vietnam — Major
Arthur R. Wicker, U. S. Air
Force 0-2 Super Skymaster pi
lot from Newberry, shares the
distinction of having launched
a North Vietnamese surface-to-
air missile (SAM) recently.
Major Wicker was flying for
ward air control over the N.
Vietnamese southern panhandle
when destruction of the SAM
became his immediate target.
The major helped direct war
planes to the SAM and the
fighter pilots fired rockets,
setting the transporter afire.
Within seconds, the SAM roar
ed upward, then flew horizon
tally into a hillside and ex
ploded.
Major Wicker flies the twin-
engine, twin-tailed 0-2 as a
member of the 20th Tactical
Air Support Squadron head
quartered at Da Nang Air
Base. He is the son of Mrs.
Sudie C. Wicker of 1905 Ben
edict St., Newberry, and Arth
ur H. Wicker, Caldwell Street,
Newberry.
The major, a 1948 graduate
of Newberry High school, re
ceived his B. S. degree from
Clemson University in 1952
and was commissioned there
upon completion of the Air
Force Reserve Officers Train
ing program. His wife, Phyllis,
is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Orville Hayden of Black-
well, Okla.
FT. EUSTIS, VA. — Army
Reserve Captain Leland A.
Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Leland S. Wilson, 903 Reid St.,
is participating in two w*»*»ts
of active duty summer training
at Fort Eusttis, Va.
He is assigned with the 67th
Transportation Group from
Jacksonville, Fla. Members of
the unit will complete summer
training August 24.
Capt. Wilson is a senior rail
way master mechanic in the
group.
A 1952 graduate of Newber
ry High school he received his
commission through the Re
serve Officers’ Training Corps
program at The Citadel in
Charleston, where he received
a B.S. degree in 1956. He is
employed by the Seaboard
Coast Line Railroad Co., in
Jacksonville, Fla. He and his
wife, Virginia, live at 4125
Dayrl Road, Jacksonville, Fla.
