The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, August 15, 1968—PAGE 7 Fireman report on activities By Lewis B. Lee Capt C. T. Millstead of the Newberry Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau, along with Chief J. E. Hazel and W. A. Smith, conducted a fire drill and training class at the Jesse Frank Hawkins Nursing Home on July .11. Instruction was given in what to do in case of fire at the Nursing Home. This in cluded proper ways to evacu ate patients, use of fire ex tinguishers, and the proper ways of turning in fire alarms. All of this training was carried out in an orderly manner. Capt. Millstead and Chief Hazel said that Mrs. Hayes and her staff were to be com mended on a job well done. On August 5, Capt Millstead, along with Engineer Lewis Lee also of the City Fire Depart ment, met with the Newberry Sertoma club. The meeting was held at Newberry Inn, and a fine meal was enjoyed by every one. Capt. Millstead and Mr. Lee presented a film entitled “Our Obligation.” The film set forth many facts about fires in pub lic schools. It was pointed out by Lee that 19 schools are in volved in fire each dav in the United States. He also stated that this could happen to one of our many schools. The in structions that children receive from parents at home and from their teachers at school could possibly save their lives if fire did break out while they were at school.
