The Mollohon Plant of the Kendall Com
pany honored its long-time employees at a
banquet Saturday night at the Community
Hall. Plant Manager W. H. Tedford pre
sented special awards to employees with
45 years service, and watches to those
with 35 years service. In the top picture

THE SERVICES
GALENA, ALA. — Sergeant
Melvin L. Allen, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lloyd C. Allen of. Rt.
1, Prosperity, has arrived for
duty at Galena Air Force Base,
Alaska.
Sergeant Allen, a radar re
pairman, is a member of the
Air Force Communications
Service. He previously served
at Patrick AFB, Florida.
A graduate of Mid-Carolina
High school, the sergeant at
tended Rollins College’s exten
sion at Patrick. His wife, Eli
zabeth, is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Phillip R. Huemeke
of Jacksonville, Florida.
USS PRINCETON AT SEA—
Fireman John L. Felker, USN,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John W.
Felker of 1228 Kinard St. is
serving aboard the amphibious
assault carrier USS Princeton
off the coast of S. Vietnam.
As a crewmember of the
ship, he is helping to provide
medical aid to wounded Mar
ines. In addition he plays an
important role in keeping the
Princeton an effective operat
ing unit of the U. S. Seventh
Fleet.
The assault carrier is pro
viding amphibious support tc
the third Marine Amphibious
Force stationed in S. Vietnam
and is one of 190 ships that
make up the world’s largest
naval fighting force—the U. S.
Seventh Fleet.
SAN DIEGO—Seaman George
W. Laird, USN, 19, son of Mr
and Mrs. Dave L. Laird of 2130
Osborne Avenue, was awarded
the Navy Unit and Meritorious
Unit Commendation while sta
tioned aboard the amphibious
Assault carrier USS Tripoli.
The award was presented to
the crew for accomplishments
during the ship’s recent deploy
ment to S. Vietnam.
As a crew member he makes
significant daily contributions
to carrying out the ship’s mis-
uon. Tripoli is designed to
;ransport Marine combat troops
into enemy waters and then
launch an amphibious assault
by placing these troops behind
enemy lines by helicopter.
The ship is presently in San
Diego making preparations for
her second Vietnam deploy
ment.
AMARILLO, TEX. — Air
man Fred L. Cumalander, son
of Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Cuma
lander of Little Mountain has
been graduated from a U. S.
Air Force technical school at
Amarillo, Texas.
He was trained as an admin
istrative specialist and has
been assigned to a unit of the
Military Airlift Command at
Travis AFB, Calif.
The airman is a graduate of
Mid-Carolina High school, Pros
perity.

BROTHER DIES
Olen Berry, Sr., brother of
Mrs. Ray Schumpert of this
city died Sunday in Granite-
ville, where he lived. He is also
survived by his widow, Mrs.
Ellen Clayton Berry; one
daughter, and three sons.
BATON ROUGE — Clarence
D. Coleman of Newberry is a-
mong more than 30 Louisiana
State University cadets who
received armed forces com
missions in campus ceremonies
August 1. The cadets, who were
commissioned into the Army,
Air Force and Marine reserves,
were all scheduled to receive
degrees at LSU’s summer com
mencement August 2.
Coleman, who was commiss
ioned into the Army reserves,
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.
D. Coleman, 1213 Crenshaw in
Newberry. He received his
bachelor’s degree in economics.
DAR YEAR BOOK
GETS BLUE RIBBON
Mrs. Elliot B. McLean, of
Seneca, state vice regent of
the South Carolina Society of
the National DAR, has just
notified Mrs. F. Scott Elliott,
Sr., regent of the Jasper Chap
ter of Newberry, of a Blue
Ribbon award for 1967-68 year
book by the national chairman.
This is the highest award giv
en.
At the March conference of
the State Society NSDAR, the
chapter’s year book won blue
ribbon. It also won a silver
award in the NSDAR honor
roll in April.

SISTER DIES
Mrs. Bessie Long Fulmer, 81
of Columbia, sister of Mrs
G. Tab Epting of Newberry,
died Thursday.
Funeral services were held in
St. Andrews Lutheran Church,
