Mrs. Johnson
died last week
Mrs. Verona Davenport John
son, 58, died Tuesday at the
Thompson hospital in Union,
after two week’s illness.
Mrs. Johnson was born and
reared in this county and was
the daughter of the late Palmer
and Ethelene Longshore Dav
enport. She was amember of
Lewis Methodist church.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by
her husband, Charlie L. John
son, Whitmire; two sons, C. L
Johnson Jr., Rota, Spain; Rich
ard E. Johnson, Whitmire; four

“Your social security number
is a mighty important doc
ument said Carlisle Bagwell,
District Manager of the Green
wood Social Security Office. He
went on to explain that each
person has an individual number
that is solely his for his life
time. From the time a person
first applies for a job to the
time when he applies for re
tirement this social security
number is the key to all his
earnings credited under social
security. He explained that for
this reason is was necessary to
make sure you showed your em
ployer your social security card
and make sure he has the cor
rect number to report your earn
ings.
“Any person contacting so
cial security can make sure
their claims or other social se
curity matters are handled cor
rectly and promptly by always
presenting their social security
number, continued Mr. Bagwell.
“We can get their present earn
ings records and process actions
on their claims more promptly
by having their correct social
security number.”
Mr. Bagwell cautioned that it
was best to always bring your
card with you and not trust to
memory when giving your social
security number. “Whether it’s
only to inquire or to retire - al
ways bring your social security
card with you,” concluded Mr.
Bagwell.
The Social Security Office is
located at 219 Magnolia Ave-
enue in Greenwood. It is open
from 8:45 A. M. to 5:00 P. M.
Monday through Friday with
special morning hours from 9:00
A. M. to 12:00 Noon on Satur
days.

PLEIKU, VIETNAM—Billy
E. Robinson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Eddie J. Robinson, 400
Drayton street, was promoted
to Army specialist four June
22 while assigned to the 8th
Infantry in Vietnam.
Spec. Robinson is a rifleman
in Co. A of the infantry’s 2nd
Battalion. He entered the army
in August 1967, completed
basic training at Ft. Gordon,
Ga., and was last stationed at
Fort Jackson, before arriving
overseas in January 1968.
The 21-year-old soldier grad
uated in 1966 from Gallman
High school in Newberry.
FORT BRAGG, N. C.—John
athan B. Floyd, son of Mr. and
Mrs. James C. Floyd, Route 1.
Silverstreet, a student at
Clemson University, is attend
ing Army Reserve Officers’
Training Corns summer camp.
During the encampment, he
is receiving six weeks of
training in leadership, rifle
marksmanship, physical con
ditioning and other military
subjects.
Cadet Floyd is a 1965 grad
uate of Newberry High school.
FT. BRAGG, N. C.—Ben P.
Woodside III, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ben P. Woodside Jr., a
student at Furman University,
is attending Army Reserve Of
ficers’ Training Corps summer
camp. The course began June
17 at Fort Bragg.
Cadet Woodside is a mem
ber of Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity and is a graduate
of Greenbrier Military School,
Lewisburg, W. Va. He receiv
ed a B.A. degree this year
from Furman University. His
wife, Alice, lives at 2016

QUI NHON, VIETNAM —
Navy Lt. (junior grade) Timo
thy W. Tedford, 25, son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. H. Tedford of
1520 Boundary St., Newberry,
is helping to prevent the
smuggling of men and supplies
into South Vietnam while serv
ing as a member of a Navy
Swift Boat.
Operating off the coast of
Vietnam he continuously pa
trols the waterways of the area
searching for enemy forces or
vessels attempting to infiltrate
the area.
U. S. AIR FORCES, Thailand.
Thad K. Hentz, son of Mr.
and Mrs. H. W. Hentz of Po
maria has been promoted to
chief master sergeant, highest
grade in the U S. Air Force.
Sgt. Hentz, a personnel ser
geant major at Korat Royal
Thai AFB, Thailand, is a
member of the Pacific Air
Forces. The sergeant is a 1946
graduate of Pomaria High
school.
