There was a time when our
lawyers were our champions
of liberty, but not now. Today r
our only champions are the
newspapers and a few wide
awake editors, iust a few. its
true, but they are our hope
in this day of confusion and
turmoil.
And we, too, are submitting.
Perhaps a concerned orator,
now and then, may have an
dea hut most of us are mildly
resolved to smile off all politi
cal invasions as not worthy oi
our time and trouble.
Yea, verily, we are a busy-
people; and we are more ab
sorbed with the price of eggs
than with the invasions of our
liberties.
We need the leadership of a
Presulent who will not he pri

YOITH INVOLVED
IN CONVENTION
In spite of all the adverse
publicity given to the modern
teenager, many an’ sincerely
interested in developing a
spiritual life. Jehovah’s Wit
nesses have especially found
this to he true.
Local witnesses will be at
tending a four-day convention
in Greenville Memorial Auditor
ium beginning August 1 and
the number of children or
teen-agers present with their
their parents will he outstand
ing.
Hecause it has been part of
their training since infancy,
children attend assemblies quiet
willingly, even though they w 1 11
be sitting through two and
three hour sessions of Bible
talks and discussions.
Thev will listen attentively.

“WHATSOEVER

In July of 19f>3 William Hen
ry Nelson, a Negro who claim
ed that America “never did
anything for me,” stole an
$18,000 shrimp boat and de
fected to Cuba. Nelson became
so fed up with life in Amer
ica that he decided life on Fi
del Castro’s sugar island would
be better.
Sheriff Beace A. Thompson
of Key’ West, Florida, said that
Nelson took the 48-foot shrimp
trawler “Euna Mae” from its
dock in Key West on July 20,
1 Odd and sailed it to the
shores of Cuba where he
wrecked it on a reef. Nelson
was rescued by Cuban seamen
and taken to Havana.
Well sir, the other day Nel
son and a couple of buddies
were picked up by the Coast
Guard while floating on an in-
r.ertube and canvas raft off
Cay Sal in the Keys. When
questioned why he decided to
return to this land that never
did anything for him. Nelson
replied that ‘‘Cuba didn’t do
anything for me either.”
Well, I have some news for
Nelson and all others who
>hare his attitude. He. nor
any like him. are ever going
sound Scriptural guidance.
Young people note with keen
interest tin* record of violence
that Christendom has made
for herself and find it diffi
cult to overlook the materialis
tic philosophy that has become
so accepted among religious
leaders. Many become disillu-
ioned and reject any and all re
ligion.
The result of the training
they receive has been an am
azing number of Witnesses
youth who willingly choose the
full-time ministry as their
career. Hundreds eventually go
on to become missionaries.
Their trip to Greenville for
their convention on August 1-4
will he just another part of
their training.
to be happy unless some
changes are made. And the
reason is obvious—they are go
ing at life in the wrong
way! Anytime one thinks that
the world owes them a living
they are in for some sad dis
appointments. What Nelson is
going to have to learn, and
anyone else who shares his at
titude, is that the trouble is
not in the country but in
themselves.
You see, the right attitude
would cause us to see what we
could do for our country, and
our fellowman, instead of see
ing what the country can do
for us. And this is the point
where the Galilean Fisher of
men comes in. He rids us of
our selfish attitude. He makes
us not aware of what we can
get from society but of what
we can give. It is in giving
that we become partners with
the Giver of Life.
How was it that John F.
Kennedy stated it? “Ask not
what your country can do for
you, but ask what you can do
for your country.” You see,
our country is exactly what
we make it. There is indeed a
lot wrong with our country,
hut sometimes the trouble isn’t
with our country but with us.
Nelson got fed up with the
I’nitod States because it didn’t
do anything for him. So he
tried communism. He became
so disgusted with communism
that he risked his life to re
turn to this country. Unless
Nelson has changed his atti
tude he might as well keep
sailing because things are not
going to be any better.
William Henry Nelson had
the wrong attitude. Many of us
(io, also. That’s the reason the
only hope for our country—
and us—lies with the Carpen
ter. He can change us .J our
attitude. And if we aren’t go
ing to try His way, we, too,
might as well keep sailing.
