County taxes
to remain at
sixty mills
Taxpayers of the county will
be happy to learn that there
will be no increase in the
county or school tax levy for
1968.
At a meeting held in the
Auditor's office Monday morn
ing, a levy of 60 mills was
adopted. Of this amount 17 1-2
are for the county, 42 1-2 for
school purposes.
The county tax levy is brok
en down as follows: Ordinary
government operation, 12 1-2
mills; bonds, 2 mills; hospital,
one mill; ambulance, 2 mills.
For general operation of
schools, 37 1-2 mills are as
signed. Five mills will be used
for bonds.
Attending the meeting were
Auditor Mrs. Jeanette Hamm;
Treasurer J. Ray Dawkins;
County Superintendent of Edu
cation James D. Brown; Rep
resentative D. P. Folk; Super-
vnsor H. B. Hendrix; and
Commissioners Ross George
and Ben F. Dawkins.
Mrs. Hamm stated that the
assessed valuation for the
county this year would be ap
proximately the same as for
1967, $12,946,905. The county
received from the state last
year, $392,000 in beer and
liquor fines and incomes.
The county budget for 1968
will be slightly under $500,-
000.
Mrs Hamm said she had not
yet received from the State in
formation as to assessed val
uation of industries in the
county. Valuation of public
utilities remained about the
same, she said, while valua
tion for merchants was off a-
bout $43,000. This was ac
counted for by the lowering of
percentage of assessed valua
tion provided by an Act of
Legislature. The percentage,
now at 12 percent, is due to
remain stationary.
Mrs. Hamm also stated that
Ocoma will be on the tax rolls
this year for school purposes
only. All new industries are
exempt from county tax for a
period of five years.
The Auditor stated that
members of her staff would be
gin typing tax bills immed
iately. They will be mailed the
last day of September.
