Thursday, July 18, 1968—PAGE 6 County taxes to remain at sixty mills Taxpayers of the county will be happy to learn that there will be no increase in the county or school tax levy for 1968. At a meeting held in the Auditor's office Monday morn ing, a levy of 60 mills was adopted. Of this amount 17 1-2 are for the county, 42 1-2 for school purposes. The county tax levy is brok en down as follows: Ordinary government operation, 12 1-2 mills; bonds, 2 mills; hospital, one mill; ambulance, 2 mills. For general operation of schools, 37 1-2 mills are as signed. Five mills will be used for bonds. Attending the meeting were Auditor Mrs. Jeanette Hamm; Treasurer J. Ray Dawkins; County Superintendent of Edu cation James D. Brown; Rep resentative D. P. Folk; Super- vnsor H. B. Hendrix; and Commissioners Ross George and Ben F. Dawkins. Mrs. Hamm stated that the assessed valuation for the county this year would be ap proximately the same as for 1967, $12,946,905. The county received from the state last year, $392,000 in beer and liquor fines and incomes. The county budget for 1968 will be slightly under $500,- 000. Mrs Hamm said she had not yet received from the State in formation as to assessed val uation of industries in the county. Valuation of public utilities remained about the same, she said, while valua tion for merchants was off a- bout $43,000. This was ac counted for by the lowering of percentage of assessed valua tion provided by an Act of Legislature. The percentage, now at 12 percent, is due to remain stationary. Mrs. Hamm also stated that Ocoma will be on the tax rolls this year for school purposes only. All new industries are exempt from county tax for a period of five years. The Auditor stated that members of her staff would be gin typing tax bills immed iately. They will be mailed the last day of September.
