Civitans name new officers New officers of the Newberry Civitan Club for 1968 - 1969 were installed by Lt. Gov. Dan Hamm, Jr. of the Prosperity Civitan Club at a meeting at the Civitan clubhouse Tuesday evening. The new officers include Bob Lister, president; Ed Young, vice president; David B. Ringer,, secretary; Adrian Summer, Jr., treasurer; L. S. Jones, Jr., chap lain; F. Scott Elliott, Jr., ser geant-at-arms; Ronald Alex ander, Ken Davis, John Eargle, Dewey Floyd, Leroy Minick, Eugene Shealy, directors; Fur man Garner, bulletin editor. Perfect attendance chevrons presented by the outgoing pres ident, Judge Frank Ward, were as follows: eight years, Furman Garner; six years, Prof. F. Scott Elliott, Sr.; five years, John Eargle and F. LEWIS FAMILY TO ENTERTAIN The Lewis Family of Augusta, Ga., “The South’s Most Versa tile Talented Family” will ap pear Saturday night, June 29, at 8:15 at Mid-Carolina High School, sponsored by the Pros perity Rescue Squad. The evening will feature a country Gospel sing. The pub lic is invited. AWARDED BOND AT MEETING Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nelsen were recently awarded a $50 bond for bringing the most dis tributors and prospective dis tributors to an Amway Dist r ib- utors meeting in Columbia. Many distributors from throughout the state were in at tendance at the meeting con ducted bv F. D. Clark. Timber marking service given One of the duties of the State Commission of Forestry under the Act of 1927 in creating the Commission is to give such ad vice, assistance and cooperation as may be practical to the pri vate owners of land. To do this, there was created a manage ment branch in state organiza tion. The head of this branch ir Assistant Forester E. C. PicK- ens. Working under him in Co lumbia are five foresters. These foresters are in charge of the nurseries, the State forests, in sect & disease work, utilization and marketing, and other phases of forest management. There are in the field thirty- seven foresters who are avail able to give management assis tance to any landowner request ing it. The landowner and the forester to go over property to gether to consider existing con ditions, then the forester makes recommendations to aid the landowner in carrying out a good forest management pro gram. There is no charge for this, but if the forester sees the need for cutting out trees feito give the others a better chance to grow, he may be able to do the marking himself. There is no charge for this ser vice. The General Assembly of 1941 passed an act authorizing the Commission of Forestry to mark and tally trees under ap proved forestry practices. The charge for marking pulpwood is 25c per standard cord and for marking sawtimber, 75c per thousand board feet tallied. PHU BAI, VIETNAM (AH- TNC) . Carol E. Williams, son of Mrs. Dorothy M. Williams, Prosperity, was promoted to Ar my private first class May 16 while assigned to the 1st Cal vary Division in Vietnam. Pvt. Williams is a rifleman in Company D, 2nd Battalion of the division’s 12th Calvary near Phu Bai. He entered the Army in November 1967, completed basic training at Ft. Gordon, Ga., and was last stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash, before ar riving overseas in May 1968. The 22-year-old soldier grad uated in 1963 from Gallman High School in Newberry. His father, L. C. Williams, lives in Agusta, Ga.
