Santee river is a swift stream
of considerable size.
The Santee, you know, start

streams from the upper part
of our State rommp down as
the Mroad and Saluda rivers

floats great ships at Charles
ton and at the great national
naval station seven miles above
Charleston.
Kngineers tell us that the
diverted water of the Santee
carries a lot of silt and pollu
tion into the water of Charles
ton harbor. Charleston, as you
know, lies between two rivers:
the Ashley and the Coop-r.
Some mav tell it this way: the
A hley and Cooper rivers meet
just beyond Charleston and
form the Atlantic ocean!
I have it in mind to tell ol
the great Colorado river, which
has not the glamor of the
Mississippi, but is one of the
great waterways of the world.
<>f course my remarks about
the Santee and Mississippi do
not affect the great Amazon
which rises in Peru and flows
hundreds of miles before it
reaches thebonler of Hraz.il on

Some one tells u> that along
that 1100 miles can be seen
some of the world’s must im
pressive natural wonders.
Rivers are very interesting,
at least some rivers are at
times. You know about the
James river, eh? Well, what
do you know? Is it a vast cur
rent carrying great cargoes?
Or is it ,emembered largely
because somewhere about 1607
a colony of men and women
lived on scant rations, while
founding the Virginia aristoc
racy? Even so!
If the aristocracy gives fame
what about the Carolinas on
the shores of the Ashley and
the Cooper? Yea verily.
The Hudson river has fame
as the stream from Albany to
New York, passing by West
Point.
After all is said our Santee
flows by Rimini. So what?
You know about the Cum-
babee, called Cumby? Down
through or near Colleton coun
ty, South Carolina. It does
nut make Walterboro a sea
port or even a river port.
The Colorado river flows 1400
miles and is famous for the
Grand Ganyon.
As to rivers, do you know
that we have two Broad rivers?
Yes, sir, two! One is up in our
Piedmont and comes down to
help form the Santee river.
Hut wo have a second Hroad
river—out from Beaufort—a
big stream.
Black river is in South Car
olina and is on' of the five
rivers which flow into a n d
around and near Georgetown.
Kven so. Hut Black river has
fame: it makes Kingstree a
port, doesn’t it? Big enough
and deep enough for a small
flat raft. Even Manning is on
Black river.
Maiming, however, does not
boast of its three or four little
streams which are hits of
Black river. Manning today is
a sort of huh of Highway 301
and has no peace or quiet dur
ing 24 hours of the day. When
1 ascribe so much to Manning
1 must admit that Florence,
South Carolina, seems to be
the hub.
No one could overlook Or
angeburg, for it is a thriving
city.
Yea, verily, Highway 301
through Florence, Turbeville to
Manning and through Orange
burg to Allendale and on south
carries thousands and thous
ands every day, even Sundays,
when most of Manning citizens
may be devoutly attending Di
vine Services.
In this discussion of South
Carolina rivers and others we
must not overlook Edisto, for
the Edisto is what makes Or
angeburg a great river port;
and the Edisto meanders to-

Charleston could teach the
world how to organize and
carry on effectively the aston
ishing plan of caring for the
children as a feature of very
extraordinarily fine Christian
service? Now then, they can
take an infant and carry him
through all the primary grades.
That is a mild statement, for
the actual service far trans
cends the imagination of most
of us.
It is an extraordinarily am
bitious and successful Christ
ian program that is of incal
culable benefit to the child as
well as to the mother who
brings her child or children to
the church school and commits
her loved ones to specialists.
