C., Thursday, June 13, 1968 Eligible folk may apply for food stamps Needy families in Newberry County should apply as soon as possible for assistance un der the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s food stamp pro gram, so they can be in time to receive help when the pro gram gets under way on July 1, 1698, USDA’s Consumer and Marketing Service said to day The Consumer and Market ing Service and the Newberry County Department of Public Welfare pointed out that there is no deadline for families to apply for food stamp assist ance. Needy persons may ap ply at any time. However, those who apply now will have an opportunity to be interview ed and possibly certified in time to start getting food stamp coupons when the pro gram first opens. Mrs. Edna Feagle, Director of the Newberry County De partment of Public Welfare, said needy persons in Newber ry county may apply for food stamp assistance Mondays thru Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the 1328 College street address, Newberry. All other persons who have low incomes and are not able to buy enough food to give their families what they need should also apply for assist ance. Among those often eligi ble are retired persons living on small pensions, aid to the blind, aid to the disabled, and old age assistance. Mrs. Feagle urges all needy persons in the county to go to the Welfare office as soon as possible and ask about the food stamps program. All per sons must be interviewed to find out if they are eligible, and must be given identifica tion cards, before they may swap their grocery money for USDA food coupons and use the coupons to buy food. Those taking part in the pro gram swap what they normally could be expected to spend on food for food coupons, then re ceive extra, free coupons. The extra coupons help food stamp families buy more food with out spending extra money— resulting in a boost in sales at local grocery stores and bet ter diets for the low-ineome families. The food stamp program is administered in each state by the state Department of Public Welfare and the Consumer and Marketing Service. McCullough; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Leon Nichols. The chapter gave Mrs. Ralph B. Baker a rising vote of thanks for her leadership this year. Mrs. E. E. Westwood gave a most interesting program on Varina Howell Davis. She was the wife of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Her childhood home, “Briars” was described, as well as the manner in which she lived. She was well educated in lan guages, music and the arts. Mrs. Westwood described the courtship and marriage of Var ina and Jefferson Davis. Their political and married life was reviewed, also her life as first lady of the Confederacy. Mrs. M. F. Bowler thanked Mi*s. Westwood for the pro gram. Mrs. W. E. Shealy clos ed the meeting with prayer. A social hour was enjoyed, during which delightful re freshments were served. New Addresses Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Rollins have moved to 2032 Piedmont street. % Mr. and Mrs. Karl Kinard are now residing at 2113 Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Knight have moved to 1220 Chapman street to make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Oglesby are now residing at 2045 Montgomery street.
