Post Office be
constructed at
Prosperity
The Post Office Department
is seeking competitive bids to
build and lease the new post of
fice building at Prosperity,
Postmaster General W. Marvin
Watson announced.
The purpose of the competi
tive bidding, Mr. Watson said,
is to encourage the most attrac
tive and economical offer to the
Government to achieve the best
possible postal service at the
least possible cost.
Under the Department’s
Lease Construction program,
the site selected on the South
west corner of the intersection
of Main and Brown Street, will
be assigned to the successful
bidder, who will purchase the
property, construct the building
according to departmental spec
ifications and lease it to the
Post Office Department for a
basic period of ten years, with
options to renew the lease foi
an additional twenty years.
The Department’s capital in
vestment will be limited sub
stantially to postal equipment.
The building will remain under
the private ownership with tin
owner paying local real estate
taxes.

Members enjoy
fellowship
The Golden Age Fellowship
met on May 15 at the Social
Hall of the Central Methodist
Church with the WSCS as host
esses. Nineteen members and
three visitors were present.
The pastor, Rev. Duffie- gave
a thoughtful devotional based
on the 23rd psalm. He made it
personal by stressing the pro
nouns; The Lord is my shep
herd; I shall not want.
Mrs L. G. McCullough, mem
orial chairman, followed with
tributes to four members who
have passed away this year;
Mrs. C. G. Blease, Mrs. Brook-
sie Way, Mrs. S. E. Longshore,
and Mrs. lola McCarley.
Mrs. Duffie entertained with
a quiz game; the answer to
each question to be a tree; for
instance; What tree is left af
ter a fire? Ans. Ash. Mrs. Rob
ert Ringer scored highest.

Earl E. Ruff
dies suddenly
Earl Dewey Ruff, 49, died
suddenly Wednesday afternoon
in Athens, Ga., after suffering
a heart attack.
Mr. Ruff was born in Saluda
county and reared in Newberry
county and was the son of Mrs.
Pearl Boozer Ruff and the late
J. N. Ruff. He was a former
resident of Newberry but for
the past several years he had
made his home in Athens and
was superintendent of South
eastern Terminal of Gulf Oil
Corp.
Mr. Ruff is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Jean Darby Ruff,
Athens; two sons, Michael and
Timothy, both of Athens; one
daughter, Miss Debbie Ruff of
Athens; his mother, Mrs. Pearl
B. Ruff, Newberry; three bro
thers, J. N. Ruff Jr., Columbia;
Murray J. Ruff, Batesburg and
Wallace B. Ruff, Pomaria;
three sisters, Mrs. Thomas
Sease, Mrs. Walter T. Lake
both of Newberry; Mrs. Har
vey Jordan, Sylvania, Ga.
Funeral services were held
Friday at McSwain Funeral
Home and burial followed in
Newberry Memorial Gardens.

of the department of economics
and business administration at
Newberry College, is co-author
of two articles published in pro
fessional journals.
The spring issue of the Mis
sissippi Valley Journal of bus

University, dealing with local
subsidies to business as a spur
to industrial development.
The current issue of a Cali
fornia quarterly, “Agricultural
History,” contains a Rinehart-
Laird article on the history of

Stamp program
be explained
to grocers
The Consumer and Market
ing Service of the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture has
scheduled special grocer meet
ings on Tuesday, June 18 to
explain the procedure for gro
cer participation in its new
food stamp program to retail
and wholesale food merchants
in Newberry county.
The food stamp program—
which will aid low-income fam
ilies in Newberry county is
scheduled to get under way on
July 1st.
According to Foster, the
Consumer and Marketing Ser
vice’s food stamp program rep
resentative at York, meetings
will be held on the following
schedule: Tuesday, June 18 at
2 P.M. in the Old Courthouse
(Community Hall ) on the
Square at Newberry)
Foster said the meetings are
designed to acquaint retail and
wholesale grocers with the new
food program.
“It is important” he said,
“that all retail and wholesale
food merchants in Newberry
attend one of these meetings
to find out how they can apply
for participation in the food
stamp program, the retailers’
responsibilities under the pro
gram, and how the program
benefits the individual grocer
and the entire community.”
At this meeting, representa
tives of the Consumer and Mar
keting Service will explain the
program fully.
