Newberry High School 1968 Grads
School seniors
get diplomas
this week
Graduation exercises high
lighted this week for several
hundred Newberry High school
seniors.
Commencement exercises were
held Tuesday night at Mid-
Carolina school, where diplo
mas were awarded by the prin
cipal, H. M. Bedenbaugh. The
salutatory address was given
by Linda Lathrop, the valedic
tory by Dean Dominick. Senior
speaker was Ron Radar.
Tonight, graduates of Gall-
man High school will receive
their diplomas from James
Weaver, principal. Bobby J.
Reeder, senior class president,
will preside. Speakers will be
Mary L. Langford, Terrie Kh,
Gallman and Mattie L. Leaks.
Salutatorian wih be David E.
Jackson, valedictorian, Rosal
ind R. Williams.
Final exercises will be held
at Newberry High school Fri
day night, at which time the
large graduating class will re
ceive diplomas from Principal
W. P. Mabry. Senior speakers
will be Tommy Plumblee, Mary
Parr and Ellen Williamson.

Sunday, June 2. Candidates for
bachelor of arts and bachelor
of science degrees total 136.
Largest previous class was in
1!*50 when 120 degrees were a-
warded, many of them to World
War II veterans under the GI
Bill. Last year, 110 degrees
were awarded.
Next Sunday’s commencement
activities will open with an 11
a.m. baccalaureate service in
A.G.D. Wiles Chapel. Dr. Karl
W. Kinard of Columbia, S. C.,
president of the South Carolina
synod, Lutheran Church in A-
merica, will deliver the ser
mon.
Diplomas will be awarded in
ceremonies starting at 5 p.m. at
Setzler Field. Commencement
The largest graduating class
speaker will be Dr. Otis L.
Shealy of WMmington, Del., a
dupont research scientist and
administrator who graduated
from Newberry College in 1944.
Dr. Shealy will receive an hon
orary doctor of science degree.
He is technical director of du-
Ponts Spunbonded Products
division, and has led in the de
velopment of a number of
synthetic textile fibers.

and campus visitors lies be
tween the baccalaureate serv
ice and the late afternoon com
mencement ceremony. A lun
cheon is scheduled from 12:30
to 2 p.m. in the college dining
hall. Between 2:30 and 4 p.m.,
seniors, parents and friends will
attend a reception at the home
of President and Mrs. A. G. D.
Wiles.
Dr. Wiles will preside at com-
mencement exercises, assisted
by Dean Conrad B. Park, Reg
istrar James C. Abrams, and
Prof. Thomas E. Epting, sec
retary of the faculty.
Music will be provided by the
members of the college band,
directed by Charles P. Pruitt.
Alumni who attended New
berry College 50 or more years
ago will be honored guests at
all commencement activities.
Graduates of 1918 and earlier
classes will attend an alumni
luncheon in Kaufmann Hall
Sunday noon. Gaines O. Boone
of Florence, alumni association
president, will speak.
