Medical wo install new officers The Woman’s Auxiliary to the Newberry County Medical Society held its last meeting of the year on May 20 at New berry Inn with Mrs. Kemper D. Lake and Mrs. J. L. Bozard as hostesses. The meeting was called to or der by the president, Mrs Syd ney E. Carter. During the bus iness session, Mrs. Carter gave her annual report and express ed her appreciation to ail of the members for their coopera tion and loyal support in mak ing possible the accomplish ments of the past year. A report of the State Con vention, held at Myrtle Beach, May 13-15, was given by Mrs. V. W. Rinehart, delegate froir the Newberry Auxiliary. Out standing speakers at the lunch eons included Mrs. Louie . H Griffin, president of the Wo man’s Auxiliary to the South ern Medical Association; Mrs. Erie Wilkinson, Constitutional Secretary to the Woman’s Aux iliary to the American Medical Association; and Mrs. C. Ben ton Burns, a past president from Sumter, whose husband re cently returned from Vietnam as a volunteer doctor. Mrs. Sydney E. Carter was elected a delegate to the Nat ional Convention of the Wo man’s Auxiliary at San Fran cisco in June. Mrs. Ralph P. Baker, a past state president, installed the officers for the coming year. They are Mrs. R. E. Livingston, Jr., president; Mrs. V. A. Long, president-elect; Mrs. James A. Underwood, vice-president; Mrs. E. G. Able, secretary; Mrs. B. M. Montgomery, treasurer; and Mrs. V. W. Rinehart, his torian. In assuming her duties at president, Mrs. Livingston as sured the club of her inten tions to continue the aims and objectives of the Auxiliary, after which the club gave a rising vote of thanks to Mrs. Carter for her endeavors this past year. Mrs. Livingston reminded the members of a Workshop to be held in Columbia on May 21. Mal loy Wheeler, 59 acres, $5. Rites held for Viet victim Pfc. Thomas I. Long, 20, hus band of Mrs. Anita Defreest Long, was killed in action, May 2 at Tay Ninch, Vietnam. Pfc. Long was born and rear ed in Newberry County and was the son of Ira B. and Sara Sligh Long of Pomaria. At the time of his death, he had been in Vietnam three weeks and was serving with the 25th In fantry Division of the U. S. Army. Surviving are his wife; par ents; six brothers, Albert Long, Ralph Long, Claude Long, and Randy Long, all of Pomaria, Marvin Long, Caryville, Tenn., and Sgt. David Long, Tuscon Air Base, Tuscon Ariz.; two listers, Miss Gertrude Long and Miss Deborah Long, both of Pomaria; his grandmother, Mrs. J. Ebb Long, Prosperity. Funeral services were con ducted Sunday at 3 p.m. from the McSwain Funeral Home, with full military rites being conducted by a Detail from Ft. J ackson. NEW TB CASES IN COUNTY There were 204 tuberculosis patients listed in health depart ment files in Area 6 on Decem ber 31, 1967. Fifty-seven of them were from Newberry County. Thirty-one persons in the area developed new active cases of tuberculosis during 1967, nine of which were in this county. These figures were compiled by the S. C. State Board of Health.
