ing.
The children gave a scrip
ture then sang God Bless
America. They recited the
pledges and salutes to the U.
S. flag, State and Confederate
flags, and sang the National
Anthem, Carolina, and Dixie.

banquet
Two Newberry College
sports figures, senior Steve
Annan and retired Football
Coach Harvey Kirkland, were
given rising ovations Wednes
day evening at the Indian
Club’s annual banquet in Kauf-
mann Hall.
Annan, an eight-letter win
ner, was given a special award
for his athletic leadership in
basketball and baseball during
his four years at Newberry.
Kirkland, athletic director at
the school since his retirement
last winter as football coach
after 16 years, was presented
with a watch by members of
his 1967 squad. He also receiv
ed an engraved silver bowl
from members of the coaching
staff, and an extemporaneous
tribute from Dr. A. G. D.
Wiles, college president.
Dr. Wiles said of Kirkland,
“Here is one of the finest men
I have ever known.” He added
that his admiration for Kirk
land-coached teams was a fac
tor in his decision to come to
Newberry College from The
Citadel where he taught for
many years.
"While at the Citadel I saw
a band of warriors coached by
Harvey Kirkland scare the
daylights out of us time and
time again,” Dr. Wiles recall
ed. “And I suppose they beat
us about a third of the time.”
Earlier, Dr. Wiles had been
presented with a special tro
phy by the basketball team, via
spokesman Steve Annan. The
award was given, Annan told
the president “in appreciation
of your unfailing support of
athletics at Newberry College.”

program concluded with the
benediction.
