COTTON WEEK
We may no longer have a
“cotton economy” in this
country as far as agriculture
is concerned, but wore it not
for cotton the payrolls of the
county would quickly decrease
by several thousand jobs, a
situation which, if it were to
occur, would be economic dis
aster.
Too seldom do we pause to
remember that Cotton IS King
m Newberry as far as provid
ing livelihood for many county
tosidents. Not onh that the
city and the county and all
residents benefit from taxes

The sale of a small strip of
land at the city water treat
ment plant area to Duke Pow
er Co. for ifoOO was approved
by city council here on Tuesday
night.
The power company plans to
use the property as a right-of-
way for construction of a pow-

give concert

is a unit of the South Carolina
National Guard stationed here.
The band will present a con
cert Sunday afternoon, May 19
at 4:00 p.m.
The concert will be played in
downtown Newberry on the
square in front of Community
