C., Thursday, May 9, 1968 ON WAY TO THRONE — May Queen Paula Jean Dickey treads petal-strewn path across Newberry College campus, en- route to her coronation as Newberry Col lege 1968 May Queen. Garland girls line the route to the throne, in colorful pa geantry on the campus quadrangle Satur day afternoon. Is winner of scholarship Ellen Williamson of Newber- ry has been announced as the winner of a National Merit Scholarship sponsored jointly by the Lutheran Church in Amer ica and Newberry College, where she plans to enroll in September. Miss Williamson is the dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Kibler Williamson. He is professor of mathematics at the college. She is one of 2,800 Merit Scholarship winners, selected from among 14,000 finalists in competition throughout the U S. In competitive examinations, all scored in the top half of one percent of graduating high school seniors in their respec tive states. Miss Williamson has been a student leader throughout her career at Newberry Hi school. She was president of her soph omore and junior classes, and is editor of the school news paper. She was first-place win ner of the Science Fair, a sen ator at Palmetto Gilds’ State and a participant in the Nat ional Science Foundation Ins titute at the University of Kansas. She has also been president of the Dramatics Club and the Classical Club at Newberry Hi and of both her intermediate and senior Luther League groups. In addition, she holds a D. A. R. and Good Citizen award. Miss Williamson is one of two LCA-Newberry College Merit Scholarship winners. The other is Kathryn Warner, of Cullman, Ala. Honored on 92nd birthday James “Jim” O. Miller, a native of the Jalapa commun ity was honored Sunday after noon, April 28, on the occasion of his 92nd birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Harley entertained with a drop-in for him in the Education Hall of St. James Lutheran church at Jalapa. Approximately 175 relatives and friends called during the three to five p.m. visiting per iod. Mrs. William Braswell pour ed punch from an attractively arranged table. Cakes, cookies and nuts were served by Cand> and Chris Johnson, Sandra Wil lard and Cheryl Harris. Mr. Miller is a brother of the late Brooks Miller of the Jalapa section. He is the last surviving member of his im mediate family. He has resided with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Sula Miller Hai ley in t h t Jalapa community for a num ber of years. For the past several months Mr. Miller has resided at the Shady Grove Rest Home in Greenwood. He is the oldest member of St. James Lutheran church. Students give piano recital The private piano students of Harriet Allen Dickerson were presented in recital on April 23 at 4 p.m. in the home of Mrs. Tom Brown, 2202 Evans Circle. Mrs. Brown greeted the students’ mothers who were special guests of the afternoon Miss Suzanne Bishop gave each guest a program of the recital. The students who performed and their selections are as fol lows: Cindy Brown, Trio, The Chase and Springtime In The Hills; Marie Underwood, The First Minuet, Waltz and Lotus Festival; Susan Schumpert, Minuet, The Cuckoo and Bal loons; Debbie Allen, Bach Aria, Schumann Melody and Fairy Tales; Louise Wheeler, Ballade, Country Walts and Drowsy Shepherdess; Susan Wilkerson, Bourree, Schubert Waltz and Polynesian Noc turne; Linda Hazel, Bach Two- Part Invention No. 14, and Beethoven Fur Elise. The recital was closed with the performance of a duet, In A Persian Market and playec by Linda Hazel and Mrs. Dick erson. Each of the students who performed in the recital had participated in the State Piano Contest which was held at Winthrop College in March. The Brown home was beau tifully decorated with arrang ements of spring flowers. At the close of the recital, Mrs. Brown invited the guests and students into the dining room where she served delicious re refreshments, and a social hour was enjoyed by all. ATTEND OFFICERS CONVENTION Mr. and Mrs: Glenn Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Self, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Harmon and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Nichols at tended the 6th Annual Spring Convention of the S. C. Asso ciation of Assessing Officials at Litchfield Inn, Litchfield Beach, on May 3, 4, and 5. Mrs. Hamm, Newberry County Aud itor, is a director of the Asso ciation. Mrs. Self, Mr. Harmon and Mrs. Nichols are members of the Association and are em ployed in the Newberry County Tax Assessor’s office. Marriages Bobby Dean Haynes and Peg gy Sue Goings of Newberry were married here on April 18 by Probate Judge Frank Ward. George E. Murrah ond Helen W. Wells of Ninety Six were married in Columbia April 30. James Waco Cotney of Pros perity and Frances E. Kleckley of Chapin were married there on April 20.
