Newberry Mills, Inc. has established a
recruitment program for both trainees
and qualified personnel. Employees who
successfully recruit either trainees or
qualified personnel are given an award.
Thus far this has met with a great deal
of enthusiasm of the entire plant.

The Auxiliary to the New
berry County Medical Society
met on Monday, April 15 at
the Newberry Inn. The meet
ing was presided over by the
president, Mrs. Sydney Carter.
Reports were given by several
officers and committee chair
men. Mrs. Virgil W. Rinehart
was elected delegate to the
meeting of the S. C. Medical
Auxiliary to be held at Myrtle
Beach May 13.
A very interesting program,
“What Our Kids don’t know
About Health” was presented
by Mrs. Jesse Bozard of Whit
mire. This program brought out
the alarming fact that the
schools are falling down on the
job of teaching health to child
ren. Dr. Hilleboe, head of the
Division of Public Health Prac
tice at Columbia University
School of Public Health and
Administrative Medicine, has
a few suggestions on the issue:
At PTA meetings, ask school
officials what kind of health
courses are being given; who
is teaching them; what’s their
preparation; how modern is the
information and where was it
obtained; is the program based
on 1966 concepts or 1926 op
inions; if your community
m
does not have an adequate
health program, get together
with other parents and medi
cal groups to stimulate a plan
of action.
The American Medical Asso
ciation now has a publication,
Health Education Service for
Schools and Colleges, which is
published monthly and is avail
able to junior and senior High
schools and colleges. A request
must be made in writing by the
principal of a school or dean
of a college in order to receive
this very informative publica
tion. Anyone in this county
who is not receiving this pub
lication and would like to be
placed on the mailing list
should write AMA, Dept, of
Health Education, 535 N. Dear
born St., Chicago, 111 60610.
Only one copy will be sent to
a school or college.
At the conclusion of the pro
gram, a delicious luncheon was
enjoyed.

PUBLIC HEARING
A public hearing has been
scheduled for Thursday, May
9, at 8:00 P.M., at the New
berry County Courthouse, by
the Newberry-Saluda Commun
ity Action, Inc. This meeting
will be for the purpose of pro
viding the public of Newberry
County an opportunity to ex
press their views, either orally
or in writing, concerning the
question of designation of a
“Community Action Agency.”
It has been proposed that the
current Newberry-Saluda Com
munity Action, Inc. be contin
ued, to operate the OEO pro
gram within this geographical
area. This meeting is being
scheduled in order to comply
with the 1967 Congressional
Amendments to the Economic
Opportunity Act.

Among them is John L.
Brock, professor emeritus of
industrial education. Mr. Brock
at one time served as head of
the industrial arts department
at Newberry High school. He
holds the bachelor’s degree in
electrical engineering from
Clemson and the master’s de
gree in industrial education
from George Peabody college.
