JAMES E. WISEMAN JR. f ■ The County Agents Column Corn Planting Time Corn is important in New berry county. Now the planters are rolling as planting of this crop begins. Clifford Smith, Mrs. Frances Neel and Bobby Long are among those early- planters who already have a good many acres planted. Our farmers are really aim ing for top corn yields this year. Hubert Long, we hear, is aiming for 200 bushels per acre. As you can imagine this goal takes a whoppin’ amount of fertilizer per acre. It also requires choosing the right hybrid variety that can stand a high plant population per acre. A word of caution on too thick planting of corn. Plant ing for over 15,000 to 16,000 stalks per acre is taking a chance on the weather. Last year’s plentiful rainfall made thick planting right. But a dry year could prove thick plant ings over 16,000 stalks per acre unsound. Seed kernels spaced 9 inches apart in 36 to 38 inch rows should give this approxi mately plant population. Get Ready For Soybeans Fields for early-planted soy beans can be fertilized and treated for weed control now. Fertilizer applied and plowed down well ahead of planting is a good practice. Treflan can be applied up to six weeks and Flanavin up to four weeks be fore planting. Two or more dis- cings of these chemicals into the soal will improve their ab ility to control weeds and grass. We are still using too much “wornout” seed for our soy bean crop. Buy certified seed or have your own soy bean seed tested for purity and germina tion. Again we remind farmers that Hampton 266 and Bragg are our two best soy bean var ieties for Newberry county. Spray Pastures Declare war on bitterweed and other pasture weeds. Now is the time to spray pastures for these weed pests. On estab lished pastures, one pound, us ually one quart of 2,4-D is needed to do a good clean-up job. On pastures with Clover, use one-half this amount. Keep milking dairy cows off treated pastures for 7days after spray ing. Feed Lawns Lawns need feeding 3 times each year. A complete fertiliz er in spring and fall and us ually one application of nitro gen in between. Those who go all-out for a well-kept lawn should use a slow release nitro gen fertilizer, such as 16-4-8 analysis. This fertilizer costs three to four times as much as regular commercial grades, such as 6-12-12 or 5-10-10. Whichever you use, apply 20 to 25 pounds per 1000 square feet of lawn area. Several weeks after applying the complete fertilizer, if the lawn color is not green enough to suit, apply additional nitgo- gen. Three to six pounds of Ammonium Nitrate or Nitrate of Soda per 1000 square feet is the right amount. A thick stand of grass is the best weed-control program. Regular feeding and proper maintenance will produce good thick stands of lawn grass. For complete details of lawn care, get a copy of Clemson’s Lawn Bulletin from our office. CHICKEN BARBECUE AT SILVERSTREET The Silverstreet PTO is spon soring a Chicken Barbecue Supper from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria on Wed nesday, April 24 at the price of $1.50 per plate. Mr. William O. “Bill” Pitts, a very prominent cook, will be in charge of the preparations for this supper which is spon sored by the local PTO every two years in behalf of the school. The general support of the public in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated. Come out to enjoy good fellowship and a very delicious meal. However, if you wish, you may come prepared to take out your supper. (Two rooms — Mr. Long’s classroom and the lib rary will be used for this pur pose.)
