Curtis E. “Hump” Shealy of
Route 1, Prosperity has an
nounced himself a candidate
for Commissioner of District
No. 2.
Shealy is a graduate of Pros
perity High school. He attend
ed Newberry College, and is a
graduate of the United States
Army Finance School of India
na. He entered and served with
the 335th Finance Office of
Bad Naumiem, Germany dur
ing World War II. Upon dis
charge he was employed by
Newberry county, and served
in this capacity until 1964.
A life-long citizen of New
berry county, he is the son of
S. W. Shealy Sr. and the late
Eva Boozer Shealy.
He is married to the former
Elaine Bowers, who is an em
ployee of Old School Mfg. Co.
He has two children, a son Dale
who is a student at Mid-Caro
lina High school, and a son De-
ron who is an infant son at
home.
He is a member of Grace
Lutheran church, also a mem
ber of the Church Council, the
Young Men’s Bible Class,
Prosperity Masonic Lodge and
the American Legion Post 24.
In his announcement Mr.
Shealy stated that under the
new system of county govern
ment he is not only asking for
the support of District No. 2,
but for the support of the citi
zens of the entire county. He
also stated that if elected he
would work to promote a pub
lic trash dump in every reason
able community.

Wiseman enters
board contest
J. E. Wiseman Jr., D.M.D.,
of this city, has announced as
a candidate for election to the
Newberry County Board of Ed
ucation from District II in the
June Democratic Primary.
A native of Newberry, he is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E.
Wiseman Sr. He graduated
from Newberry High School,
attended Wofford College and
graduated from the University
of South Carolina in 1959. He
graduated from the University
of Louisville School of Dentist
ry and immediately returned to
Newberry where he opened his
office.
Dr. Wiseman is a member of
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
and a former member of the
vestry. He is a Lion; past presi
dent Newberry Jaycees; mem
ber American Dental Associa
tion; South Carolina Dental
Association; central Dist. Den
tal Society of which he is past
president; secretary - treasurer
S. C. Academy of Practicing
Administration; and member of
Masonic Lodge No. 87, A.F.M.
He is married to the former
Miss Sallie Ruff of Columbia
and they have three children,
Jimmy, 10; Bill, eight, and Da
vid, six.
In making his announcement,
Mr. Folk said:
“As your representative in
the South Carolina House of
Representatives, after the en
couragement of many people
throughout the county in the
past two weeks, I decided to
offer for this important posi
tion again.
“With deep humility I would
like to thank the people of
Newberry County for having
bestowed upon me this high
honor of serving them for four
consecutive terms. We—you
and I—have built up seniority
in the House of Representa
tives and now, as your repre
sentative, we rank 26th out of
124 House members. This is
your seniority, and I humbly
ask your support fbr re-elect
ion as your House member so
that we may continue this
seniority for another two
years. ”
In race for
board seat
in announcing for the Board
of Education, Dr. Wiseman said,
“ The reason I’m running for
this important job is because
I’ve got too much at stake, in
the field of education. It be
hooves us to get the best pos
sible educational and vocational
advantages for our children. It
is alarming to see two thirds of
our high school students grad
uate and have to leave the
county because they are not
adequately prepared for a voca
tion.”
Wiseman also indicated he
is keenly interested in the phy
sical fitness of children. Physi
cal fitness activities of our
children need to be implement
ed,” he said.
David Luther Ruff of the St.
Phillips community, presently
serving his sixth year as an
appointed member of the New
berry County Board of Educa
tion announced as a candidate
for the School Board from
District Two in the June Dem
ocratic primary.
A native of this county, he
is the son of the late A. P.
(Jolly) Ruff and Leila Sease
Ruff of the St. Phillips com
munity. He graduated from St.
Phillips High School and at
tended Newberry College.
He was employed with New
berry Drug Co. for years and
then entered a partnership with
Ruff Brothers Grocery. He
was born and reared on a farm
and has operated a farm most
of his life.
Prior to his appointment on
the Newberry County Board of
Education six years ago, he
served as a trustee on the Area
Advisory Boards for the Po-
maria and St. Phillips area for
24 years.
He has been a director of the
Newberry Electric Cooperative
for 20 years and is presently
its vice president, a position he
has occupied for the past two
years. He is a member of the
Pomaria Ruritan Club and the
South Carolina Association of
School Boards.
Ruff is a member of Saint
Phillips Lutheran church,
where he serves on the Church
Council. He was a member of
thebuilding committee when
the present new church was
built, and he is currently
chairman of the fund raising
committee for the 1968 build
ing fund.
He is married to the former
Miss Nell Lominick and they
have three children, Richard
Henry Ruff, Mrs. Mary Sease
Ruff Riser and Miss Lucile
Ruff, a student at Newberry
College.
In announcing for the Edu
cation Board, Ruff stated, “I
have been active in at least
90 percent of the meetings
since I have served on the
Board of Education. I believe
in the best education that can
be provided for our children.”
City Building
Permits
The construction permits for
building of a new sanctuary for
O’Neal Street Methodist church
boosted building permits issued
by the city last week to a value
of $131,291.
Other permits issued were

New Courthouse every day during the courthouse
