Ga- hagan, is one of the few female Certified Public Accountants in South Carolina. Prior to coming to Newberry, she was associated with Alton P. Hay, CPA in Winnsboro for four years. She has opened a CPA office here in Farmer’s Mutual Building, 1112 Calhoun St. The Gahagans have three children, Drew, Joy and Jeanne. Nich ols, Joyce Chapman, Larry Danielson, Linda W. Kesler, Luther B. Bedenbaugh, Miss Jo. Shannon. Rev. Wallace at pastorate in Virginia The Rev. Campbell Davis Wallace has accepted the call of the Ashland Presbyterian Church, Ashland, Virginia to become its pastor. The Rev. Wallace has been supplying the pulpit of the church since January 1. Mr. Wallace was born here in 1921. He attended the Cit adel for two years before en tering the U. S. Army. He was wounded in action at St. Lo and was released from service as a captain. After the war, he entered Presbyterian College, Clinton, where he was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While doing graduate work in psychology at Duke University, he decided to enter the minis try, and entered Union Theo logical Seminary, Richmond, Va. in the fall of 1949. After completing his middle year at the Seminary, he was married to Eleanor Bear dau ghter of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Bear. Following his graduation from Union, Mr. Wallace was pastor of a home mission church in Blakey, Ky. from 1952 to 1955 when he and his wife decided to enter foreign mission work. After a year’s residence in Brussells, where they attended the Belgian Colonial School to learn French and study the history of the Congo, they were assigned as missionaries to the American Presbyterian Congo Mission at Leopoldville. Their last assignment was as professors in a theological school at Leubo. After a 12-month leave of absence, the Wallaces were planning to return to the Congo as professors i n the Union Seminary in Lulaburg, but because of a health condition, the Board of World Missions recommended that Mr. Wallace not resume duty in a tropical climate. history department of Newber ry College, who reviewed the book, “The White House And Its Thirty-four Families” by Amy LaFollete Jensen. The first occupants were John and Abigail Adams, 1800-1801. During James Madison’s ad ministration, the White House was burned by the British. The book concerns the family and social life of the White House families. The speaker described briefly the Madisons, tht Monroes, the Johnsons, the Abraham Lincolns, and other occupants. Miss Hattie Belle Lester led in an impressive memorial ser vice in memory of Mrs. T. Roy Rev. Gahagan now at Smyrna Rev. Charles 0. Gahagan re cently accepted the pastorate of Smyrna Presbyterian church on the Belfast road, and he and his family are now residing in the manse adjacent to the church. Rev. Gahagan is a graduate Summer Sr., a member who passed away on January 29th. Several relatives were present. Several items of business were discussed, especially the events of the American History month. The hostess served delicious refreshments consisting of pas tries, cheese rings, cake and punch. Congressional District Student- Teacher Achievement Recogni tion (Star) program in Green wood March 19. Mary Bryan will compete with STAR stu dents from each of the other nine counties for STAR stu dent of the Third Congressional District. She was named county STAR student on the basis of top grade in the Scholastic Ach ievement Test in competition with students from participat ing high schools in the county. Mary Bryan has named Miss Linda Darby as the STAR teacher of Newberry Hi school. The teacher also become county STAR teacher end advances with the student to district competition. District winners will win a four-day tour of South Carolina and advance to state competition at the State STAR recognition luncheon in Columbia in April. State STAR student will win a $500 schol arship trip to Europe. The STAR teacher for the State winner will receive a $500 cash award.
